Today we’d like to introduce you to Micheal Brennan.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Micheal. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started in digital marketing to prove a point to my father that his business needed a website to succeed. He wanted to go old school, so I went and got a website built and learned how to rank it on Google. As soon as the site started showing up on Google, his phone started ringing and I knew I was onto a winner. I had found an inexpensive way for small businesses to get more customers. I spent a number of years working for other companies before finally biting the bullet and going it alone in 2014. It was daunting at first, but I gritted my teeth and worked hard to build a customer base. 3 years later and we’re still here, going from strength to strength.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been tough at times but really worth the effort to get to this point. You have to be patient when you are trying to grow a business. In the early stages of the business, I paid myself peanuts – literally, all while planning and trying to pay for our wedding in 2015, as well as welcoming our first child into the world in 2016. Sometimes you might think, “Things would be easier if I had a full time salaried job”. But the freedom that comes with being self-employed is amazing. I love what I do, I love helping businesses grow and I love growing my own business. It’s funny how different your original plan can be to the reality. For instance it took me 18 months to hit the monthly revenue goal I expected to hit in month 2!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the SMBclix.com story. Tell us more about the business.
SMBclix is a digital marketing agency. We specialize in generating inbound leads for small and medium businesses (hence the SMB in the name). We do this mainly through search engine marketing, through Google Adwords and Search Engine Optimization. Long story short, if you were a plumber in Boston, we could have it so that every time someone Google’s “Plumber Boston” your website shows up on Google’s first page and you will likely receive their call. I think our unique edge is that we try to educate our customers. Too many company’s in our industry try to make internet marketing seem like hocus pocus, when the truth is pretty much anyone can learn the skills needed to market online. We do our best to explain exactly what we are doing, why we are doing it and the results we are aiming for. I think transparency is key for a successful relationship.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I can only see it getting bigger as everything moves online, I think newspapers and television in their current form are having their last hurrah. So it will be interesting the see how they evolve and move towards an online model.
