Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Sherman.
Jonathan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was a youth I always gravitated towards art and music. But it was not until my mid-20s that I fully awoke to my calling as an Artist. It occurred amidst the rumbling sounds of avalanches 16,000 feet up a mountain in Chamonix, France – where if you fall, you will likely tumble to your death. It was there that I experienced an awakening, an insight into my true nature and purpose. In that moment I realized that I wanted to make Art more than anything else in the world and that I was meant to do it – the kind of Art that fills you up with all of the love in this Universe. Divine Art. I was being called off the mountain, away from my dreams as a boy, and towards my dreams that would fulfill me as a man. From that moment onwards, I have been traveling unwaveringly along a path towards awakening the Master Artist within myself that had lain dormant for too long. I moved out of the mountains and spent six years living in Florence, Italy, the heart of the Italian Renaissance. In this city, the greatest creative union of human and spirit occurred and has left an indelible mark on the consciousness of humanity; after six years of studying and absorbing all of the Masterpieces and divine radiance that the city offers, I returned to my home in Marblehead, Massachusetts to establish a working studio with my wife in which to create my Artwork and to illuminate and train future Artists.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I consider a response to this question, it seems clear that there really have been two roads that I am constantly traveling on. The first one is my Artistic development and production. I am lucky to say that the first road has been quite smooth. I have had success with many sales of most of the Artwork that I have been fortunate enough to create, have received good commissions when I needed them, and have always been believed in and supported by my wife, family, friends, and community. On this road everything always seems to mirror back to me that I am on the right track and that I am of value. The second road has been where all the challenges have been encountered and it has not been smooth, to say the least. This is the road of my self-development and the pacifying of my state of being. It has been through the traversing of these internal mountain ranges of fear, doubt, limiting beliefs, negative emotions, and confusion that I feel all of the true magic has transpired. The effort I have put forth in the realm of my internal alchemical transformations are what have opened the doors to my artwork and creative process becoming so effortless at this stage of my life.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Studio of Jonathan Sherman – what should we know?
The Studio of Jonathan Sherman was established in 2010 in the heart of Marblehead’s historic district. With a principal focus on the creation of oil paintings, drawings, and sculptures, the Studio also makes original illuminated manuscripts and treatises in various areas of knowledge such as Tibetan Buddhist Tantric Yoga, seasonal flowers and Geometric Knots. Our studio, creatively speaking, is most known for its exceptionally high quality of work: rich with spirit and beauty, craftsmanship, intellectual content, and uplifting energy. The works of Art are manifested by working in creative harmony with the Divine, an ever present loving creative energy from which all things have come into being. Having been created in this way, the Artworks tend to have their own divine radiance which is uplifting to be around and reminds us of our own true natures – loving, joyous, purposeful, expansive, thoughtful and kind. Educationally speaking, we are a studio that facilitates the awakening, illumination, and training of Artists. We draw students who are looking to develop their Artistic technique while simultaneously cultivating their knowledge of self. We believe these two aspects must go together, for without knowledge of self and connection to the Divine, technique is not a nourishing Artistic expression on its own.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe the greatest quality that has led to any of my successes, whether personal or professional, has been a complete dedication to aligning with my divine self. Learning to hear, listen to, and trust the guidance of one’s own unique voice is the only thing that truly seems to be of value.
