Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Yelena Baskin.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My background is in experimental neuroscience, as I was studying recovery of function after brain injury using a mouse model. I respecialized to earn my clinical training, focusing on neuropsychological testing. After acquiring training in a variety of settings, including in-patient, outpatient and school settings, I decided to start my own practice. Neuropsych Assessments of Greater Boston (NAGB) was started in 2013; I perform neuropsych assessments to better understand the relationships between brain and behavior. Within a year, NAGB began to grow due to demand for assessments. Currently, there are 7 doctors doing assessments for NAGB; we see children ranging from pre-school age to young adults. As of now, we have two offices, West Roxbury and Burlington. Typical concerns include ADHD, cognitive functioning, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Learning Disabilities, Mood Disorders, Trauma-related impairments and Anxiety. Our goal is to continue to grow to better accommodate the need for people seeking an evaluation.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of the initial obstacles included getting our name out there. Many people think that they need to go to a hospital for an assessment, often times being put on a very long wait-list. We have worked to become more known in the community (i.e. sponsoring booths at mental health walks and conferences, speaking at community services agencies). We are developing a reputation for providing high quality, comprehensive assessments, but continue to strive to become more well-known. Another major obstacle has been working with insurance, which can limit the scope of an assessment.
Neuropsych Assessments of Greater Boston – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am very proud of the company that NAGB has evolved to be. All the doctors working with NAGB are licensed clinical psychologists who specialize in pediatric neuropsychological assessment. Each doctor is highly motivated to provide optimal care for their clients, conducting thorough evaluations to help answer questions regarding functioning and diagnostic profile. Each doctor spend a substantial amount of time with each client as well as with their families (during the initial appointment and follow-up feedback appointment) to best understand present concerns, developmental history and overall profile. We do not double-book appointments, making each appointment the priority.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I am proud that NAGB is a group of independent doctors that work together to provide consultation and feedback. Doctors participate in staff meetings to share opinions, review cases, listen to speakers present on related topics and offer suggestions. At NAGB, neuropsychological testing is not conducted in a vacuum, as it is in many settings, but rather, doctors collaborate and consult as needed to provide optimal care to clients.
