Meet Jimmy Lai and Monlan Yuan of Jimmy Lai DMD in Randolph

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jimmy Lai and Monlan Yuan.

Jimmy and Monlan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Ever since I was a young child, I have always been fascinated by how things work and have a passion for various kinds of repairing: from reconstruction of old stuffed animals, mechanical movement wrist watches, household electronic appliances, to motorcycle and full size sedan, I have done it all. Smiles and gratitude from my family and friends were very rewarding when I make things they needed in everyday life work again.

When I studied Veterinary Medicine in Taiwan, I discovered my dexterity with surgery and my ability to stay clam while working with animals in need of urgent treatments. However, my childhood dream was to become a scientist, after graduation I came to US, obtained master degree in Molecular Biology and worked as a senior scientist for a couple of years. During then I taught myself computer languages and became a cheminformatic scientist, designing and screening potential docking sites on cell surface to advance pharmaceutical approaches to treat infertility. I enjoyed research. These wonderful work experience helped me confirm that I want to combine my biomedical background and dexterity with surgery to make direct and positive impact on people’s life. My uncle is a dentist and has practiced general dentistry in Malden for 20+ years, I witnessed how he helped his patients solve their dental problems and gain their health and confidence back. His work inspired me to become a dentist.

I have served in Malden and neighboring towns since I graduated from Goldman School of Dental Medicine, Boston University. In 2012, I started my own clinic in Randolph, providing a broad range of preventive and restorative dental cares which include filing, root cannel, crown, bridges, denture, implant, mini implant for denture, etc.

This May marked the 10th year of my dental career. Looking back, I feel very fortunate to pursue my dream and choose dental medicine as my vocation. In addition, I am very grateful for my patients’ trust and the privilege to know them and help them with dental needs.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Dentist is a business owner, an entrepreneur, and the main employee providing the dental care. Running a business is challenge for anyone, especially for a dentist. Dental schools focus on dentistry and spends about 1/50 of the time in dental school talking about practice management. When I became a practice owner, it is essentially up to me to figure it out how to be able to balance multiple roles and manage my business. Dentists also have to manage office staff. It requires gaining new skill set dealing with all different types of people and personalities while trying to keep everyone happy and productive.
