Meet Greg Cumings of Flagship Homes in Belmont

Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Cumings.

Greg, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I moved back to Boston after having lived in Japan for 4 years teaching English and Practicing Karate. I took a real estate course and started working for Century 21 in Brookline. After a year I quickly realized that I was bringing more to the office than I was getting in return so I started Flagship Homes with a fellow agent. We focus primarily on helping buyers and sellers with their residential real estate needs in the Greater Boston Area. For a few years we even expanded to Rhode Island when the business took us there on account of the high number of short sales and foreclosures. We remain small and independent with only about 5-10 agents at any given time.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a business owner and entrepreneur the biggest struggle is to stay focused and remain self-motivated. There is no one telling you to make a call, knock on a door, or update that blog. For the most part in Real Estate you eat what you kill and only survive if you sell. You don’t have the luxury of paid days off, sick days or overtime. On the flip side you can make your own schedule, work when you want and play when you want. There is no one to point the finger at if something doesn’t work out but you get complete satisfaction when you do a job well done.

Please tell us about Flagship Homes.
We provide real estate services to buyers and seller of residential real estate. We differentiate ourselves in the sense that we don’t limit the areas we cover nor the lengths we go to support our clients. Because we work with investors as well as owner occupants we sometimes need to go to areas that are developing and not just within a two or three town radius. We will help sellers and buyers with renovations, repairs, clean outs, estates, and sometimes bankruptcies. We are painfully honest when it comes time to buy or not buy. People’s lives are busy and complicated. We can help them navigate the stresses and bumps encountered on the way.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Walking to the beach with my older brother, crossing the sand dunes and jumping in the ocean. The best part was the inlet when the tide was going in and out and you could float on your back with the current. We had to be careful not to let our golden retriever get too close or we were sure to get scratched when he paddled out to save us.
