Today we’d like to introduce you to Tristan Nguyen.
Tristan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Prior to 2016, I worked at medium to large companies and I would be one out of at least a dozen of other highly experienced CPA-level accountants that supported those companies with their accounting and finance. Accountants have a vital role to the success of any business. We are the ones watching over the financial health of the companies to keep the business running smoothly. We are also the ones working with company executives to create budgets and projections and to derive strategies to strengthen and grow the business. In 2016, I realized that most small businesses do not have the resources to hire a team of experienced accountants to support them and they are the one that needed the most support. Small businesses are cash-strapped and therefore the accounting and finance functions often fell on one of the employees without any accounting background or the owner(s) who is/are already wrestling for time to wearing many other hats. As such, I started Tristan Nguyen CPA, LLC to provide small businesses with the support they need and can afford.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There were many challenges along the way and I am sure there are many more to come. One of the toughest challenges that I had was managing my personal cash burn because I was not getting a steady paycheck like when I had a job. Before I quit my job, I did save up a little war chest anticipating that it would take some time to build up the customer bases. It took longer than I thought and so I had to review my lifestyle and trim some fat on my personal expenses. That exercise made me realized that I was spending a lot more than I should have for some time. I used to eat out 4 to 5 times a day and now I cook on most days which is good since I am also eating healthier.

Tristan Nguyen CPA, LLC is an outsourced accounting company offering finance and accounting services to small businesses. We provide real- time bookkeeping, payroll services, process bills and invoices, budgeting and forecasting, process improvements, financial reporting, and taxes. We pretty much take on all the dirty work to free up time so that small business owners can focus on what’s important to them. If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would try to get a few clients first before quitting my job. I could have supported those clients at nights and on weekends and keep the full-time job.
