Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Dooley.
Katie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I actually did not set out to be an Acupuncturist. During my undergrad, I had a huge interest in health and exercise, and worked for years in different parts of the fitness industry. It wasn’t until I graduated that I began to look into acupuncture, and then things moved very quickly! I was never a huge fan of taking lots of medications, and advocated for people working with their bodies, as oppose to against them. I believed that with proper diet and exercise, the human body is capable of way more than we can imagine, still this was not enough. With so much going on in people’s lives today, it was clear there was a piece to the health puzzle that I was missing, and this is where Acupuncture came into play. If exercise was the Yang, acupuncture was the Yin I was looking for to balance it. Only six months after finishing my undergrad, I was back in a classroom learning acupuncture, and the rest is history.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been some ups and downs along the way, but I think they were necessary to get me where I am now. Leaving school, the idea of setting out on your own is both exciting and daunting. I was able to work in a few established clinics before also opening my own, in a shared space with a wonderful PT, Kelly Holohan, and an equally wonderful Pilates instructor, Michelle Silberman-Hubbard. The camaraderie in our space makes for a harmonious and positive environment for healing. I’ve been here in Newton for almost two years and, with business steadily increasing, it was been a really great experience so far.
Please tell us about Balance Acupuncture.
At Balance Acupuncture, my goal is ensure that people leave, in some way, better than they came in. There is currently only one treatment room, which allows for individual and undivided attention for each patient. Over the years, I’ve seen people for anxiety, migraines, fertility, and chronic pain, but I wouldn’t say that I have a specialty. Instead, I strive to do the best for each patient that is in front of me and that is definitely one thing that I am very proud of. I think that is important for people to feel like a person in front you, and not just the next name on a list of appointments.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
As a kid, I lived at the beach. When 7:00AM rolled around on a nice weekend, my family would already be packing the cooler and heading for a long day at Nantasket beach. My immediate family, aunts, uncles, and cousins would all meet up and if weren’t in the water all day (we usually were), we would play run the bases and eat sandy sandwiches with the biggest smiles. Summer beach days were always the best days!
