Meet Angelica Timas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelica Timas.

Angelica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I moved to Boston, USA as a teenager, where I completed high school, I’ve always had a passion for fashion I initially started college majoring in Fashion Designing but life circumstances offered me a detour, so I opted to pursue a major that I could obtain a job and a reasonable salary immediately after graduating. I earned two Master’s degrees in Professional Studies in Informatics and Computer Science though my plan to pursue a PH.D in the same field was place on hold when I decided to pursue my passion for fashion.

Fashion remained a passion for years following, but it wasn’t until my late thirties, I found myself rethinking my life, there was a void, an emptiness, instead of continuing my pursuit of a post-graduate degree I decided to follow my passion, Fashion! I am a full time Senior Software Developer, wife, mother and CEO of my label Angelica Timas, my dream is surely a reality.

I have no formal training in fashion, I mastered my skills by self-taught knowledge and true passion for what I envision in my work. The aesthetic of my collections are inspired by various passions: my culture, my history, nature, my love for architecture and the simple things that life has to offer.

I have been sketching since high school, but piled it away along the years. I worked on learning the craft behind the scenes (closet designer per se), and decided to officially launched my brand February 2014.

Has it been a smooth road?
No, of course not. I don’t believe anything you work hard for comes without struggles and sacrifices. I come from a community where people are very judgmental and critical, It was hard to come out and present myself as a Fashion Designer, there was a lot of negativity, a lot of bashing and negative feedback even from family. But I didn’t allow that to hinder my plans, I actually used it to fuel me to do better, to be better in this new field. Today is still a struggle to find acceptance and support from my community. My biggest fear was failure, the fear of failure and being made a laughing stock, but fortunately I am in a better place now.

My scheduled has become extremely hectic over time, sacrifices had to be made in order to take this ‘hobby’ to another level. Time with family and friends were cut short, no vacations, and very late nights became the norm. My biggest struggle was and is maintaining a full-time job, manage my daughter’s schedule, who is an actress, model and dancer. Managing the travel back and forth to auditions, jobs, and dance practices, performances, working full-time and taking on a fashion business is at times overwhelming and sometimes a struggle, but I don’t think about it, I just do it, and deal with the challenges at day at a time.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
At the heart of the brand there’s an alter-ego, a muse, she is confident, she is high spirited, fun, strong, she is on the go but slows down to enjoy the night, she has a versatile yet a unique taste which makes her have a style all her own. That is who I design for, this muse is the everyday woman who has unique style and her personality reflects it.

The concept behind the label, is “low maintenance”, “simple”, and “versatile” fashion. Each collection features edgy yet classic, while the aesthetic is a fusion of asymmetry, minimalism, and color. Angelica Timas is a clothing label that offers its clientele limited collections of luxurious pieces. Each piece is unique and hand-crafted, made in small quantities giving an exclusive and individual feel. I design primarily for the woman who shares the same traits as my muse, the versatile woman who is also a trendsetter who is bold, simple, but very elegant and chic.

I have been told that my designs are different. Although I design with ‘simplicity’ in mind I pay very close attention to details. What sets Angelica Timas apart is the ability to provide structured garments and maintain the “minimalism” aspect of the brand’s concept without being too boring. I don’t specialize in anything in particular, I offer a range of garments. I design each garment with the capability to be worn with other pieces in the collection as well as other items in an existing wardrobe.

I am most proud as a company, for the fact that Angelica Timas is a young company only 3 years in the market, but has been widely accepted and embraced by the fashion community here and abroad.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I recently had this discussion with other individuals in the Boston Fashion community. In terms of Fashion, Boston is small, in comparison to other major fashion hubs, but is growing. Personally, I didn’t find Boston very welcoming of me as a new designer, as a matter of fact I found it difficult to break in the existing fashion niche in Boston. I had to go outside of Boston, to Rhode Island, Vancouver, New York before doing a show in Boston. I had to create a buzz around my label before Boston paid attention.

As the Boston fashion scene grows new designers can take advantage of it, explore the opportunities, network, make themselves visible, and put their foot in the door. My humble opinion is that Boston could improve in terms of discovering new talent, finding more local designers to be featured, as opposed to the habitual known designers.
