Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Resnick Rotman.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I always knew that I wanted to work with children in the field of speech language pathology. I started my career working with students in the school setting and seeing infants and toddlers in their homes through Early Intervention. My private practice was born when the clients I was seeing through Early Intervention aged out of the program but did not qualify for services through the public schools. I continued to treat these children privately. When I moved to Boston from New York City I worked at Boston Children’s Hospital, where I provided evaluations and treatment to a wide range of children. During this time, I maintained a small private practice after hours. After my son was born I transitioned to working privately full time in order to offer more flexibility to my clients.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Reaching goals always has its bumps. There have been many years in which I put in a lot of long hours, especially while working in the hospital setting and maintaining a small private practice. Everything that I have done has brought me to this point and so I am grateful for the experiences that I have had.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I maintain a private speech and language practice in which I specialize in evaluating and treating children with speech and language delays and disorders. I have advanced training in PROMPT (Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets) technique. I am also certified in Hanen Centre’s It Takes Two to Talk and More than Words. I am most proud of being able to help children meet their goals while providing steady support for their families. This sets me apart from other private practices.
What were you like growing up?
My family and friends have always been important to me. I was a very serious student but always balanced academics with extra-curricular activities, like tennis, and social endeavors. I have always enjoyed working with children. I started babysitting relatives and children in the neighborhood when I was in middle school. I spent my high school summers working as a counselor in day camps.
