Meet Beth Kurson of Kiki D. Design & Consign in Newton Centre

Today we’d like to introduce you to Beth Kurson.

Beth, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in Suffern New York about 45 miles north of NYC. I’ve always had an eye for fashion and a love of the arts and design. At a young age I was putting outfits together with the perfect look and fit. I came to Boston to go to college and spent the greater part of my career in advertising for Dunkin’ Donuts and sales for WODS Oldies 103.3. During these years I loved dressing for work! It was during these years that I started buying and consigning my clothes at The Closet in Boston. These were the early years of consignment when most people thought it was pretty strange to buy “used” clothes. But I loved it because I could get great pieces that I could never afford as a young woman just starting out. As I got older the consignment business continued to grow and I became a consignment junkie seeking out the best consignment shops in Boston and in my travels to other parts of the country. Over the last 15 years I started designing jewelry as well, called Kiki D. Design. I use lots of pearls, rough cut diamond pieces and semi-precious stones. I love working with silver chain which I oxidize to get a mottled patina that gives the chain texture and depth. In 2011 I decided to open my own store to combine my love of consignment and jewelry design. I wanted to keep my design name so the shop is aptly named Kiki D. Design & Consign. I have spectacular, fashion forward consignors with high end designer taste and style. The shop is filled with beautiful designer clothing, handbags, shoes and accessories on consignment. Along with my jewelry line there is no other shop in the Boston area that rivals Kiki’s as my customers and consignors like to call it!!! I have now been in business since 2011 and couldn’t be happier. I have a thriving business and get to do what I love every day. I don’t just sell used clothes, I style lots of women who can’t wait to get Kiki D’d! I’m having a blast!!!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business is a ton of work and of course comes with a plethora of challenges but it has been worth every minute! I have learned so much and still am!!!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Kiki D. Design & Consign – what should we know?
I am most proud of taking a risk to do what I love doing. I help lots of different types of women to develop their own style and at the same time the nature of my business is very “green”. One persons “mistake” is a treasured gem to the next owner. I am known for being the place to go if you want the best high end designers and the most unique in the Boston market. No other consignment boutique houses a jewelry designer as well. This combination sets me apart from all the other retail shops in the market. Kiki D. is really a high end fashion boutique which many of my first time customers don’t realize is consignment when they first walk in the door!

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My success is based on my incredible group of consignors who keep bringing in the most spectacular pieces for me to sell for them! Equally important are my customers who appreciate the designers and quality of merchandise I carry. It’s a winning combination. I believe I have created an atmosphere that women gravitate toward both on the giving and receiving end. My consignors trust me to sell their pieces at a fair price and my buyers trust me to dress them in clothes that not only fit beautifully but look fabulous!
