Meet James Pergola of Decore Upholstering Company in Chelsea

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Pergola.

James, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My grandfather started the business in 1938. I have been working there since I was about 12. As a kid I took a liking to it. Growing up with dyslexia made reading and writing a challenge. I had a knack for upholstery and working with my hands. The company has been passed down through the generations. I grew up working and learning from my grandfather. You could say I was his apprentice, and I took the opportunity to learn every aspect of upholstering. I am one of the few people that can make a custom piece of furniture from raw materials. I know how to build it from frame to finish.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Working with family is always a challenge.

Decore Upholstering Company, Inc. – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Decore Upholstering Company, Inc. is a fine furniture manufacturing company, we deal strictly to the trade. We can make a variety of custom pieces or refurbish an antique. We take pride in our work and the excellence of our furniture. What sets us apart from others is that we are a small family run company.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I am what you would call a perfectionist. Success to me is happy clients. I want them to feel as if the pieces we make or refurbish are as they envisioned. I look for precision to detail and a willingness to learn.
