Today we’d like to introduce you to Luke DiLillo.
Luke, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always had an interest in the complexities of the human body and how it can heal itself. My interest for physical therapy began when rehabbing my own injuries that came with playing college lacrosse. I went on to pursue that interest and received my Doctorate in physical therapy from MGH Institute of Health Professions in 2013.
I have been working in outpatient orthopedics and part time at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Charlestown for the last 4 years. With that said, I have seen a wide variety of patients ranging from those who have suffered sports injuries, orthopedic surgeries, total joint replacements, stroke, traumatic brain injuries, burns, amputations, fractures, motor vehicle accidents and the most common culprit, low back pain.
After 4 years of practice in an insurance based model I began to grow frustrated with the lack of high quality care my patients were receiving. Unfortunately, the medical world is operating under a “volume-based” model where its primary goal is numbers and NOT quality. I started District Physical Therapy & Wellness because I wanted to offer my skills at the highest degree of quality possible. Additionally, my services are offered in a mobile model where I treat clients in their home or office making for a more convenient physical therapy experience.
My goal when creating District Physical Therapy & Wellness was to create a physical therapy practice that offered the client a valuable experience which is not only convenient but easily understood and efficient. I have a passion for the skills that I have acquired through years of schooling and offering these skills the public on my own terms is very liberating while also delivering excellent outcomes!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Receiving a doctorate in physical therapy was a lot of work but a very rewarding experience. While in physical therapy school, I received absolutely no education on business management, accounting, marketing and sales. Now that I am a business owner, I feel like I’m back in the classroom while I try to learn all things business. I’ve recently learned more about all that Boston has to offer in terms of supporting entrepreneurship and the start-up scene (General Assembly classes, weekly networking events, Creative Mornings, etc.)
My biggest struggle thus far is determining how to best reach clients that are looking for a more convenient alternative to the current model of physical therapy. I look forward to continuing to educate myself on entrepreneurship and advancing District Physical Therapy & Wellness’ client base.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
District Physical Therapy & Wellness is a mobile physical therapy service offering clients physical therapy in their home or office which makes for more convenient and efficient delivery of care. I specialize in orthopedics including but not limited to all sports injuries, neck/back pain, shoulder instability, fractures, strains/sprains, hip pinching/clicking, ankle instability, knee pain and all running injuries.
I have a keen interest in shoulder dysfunction because of the complexities that make up the human shoulder. When you stop and think about it, the shoulder is an amazing joint that separates humans from all other species. Coincidentally, it is often the most common source of pain due its complexities but also the postural deficits that technology is creating within the public (listen to your mother when she says “sit up tall!”).
I am most proud of offering my skills in a mobile format, making it easier for clients to access my skills. I am very passionate about helping people move without pain. Whether you’re an athlete, weekend warrior or someone who can’t stand that low back pain while sitting at your desk, District Physical Therapy & Wellness will travel to you to ensure you begin to lead a pain free life. What sets District Physical Therapy apart from others is that I offer my skills for 60 minutes and you only see me, every session. This allows for excellent continuity of care and ample time to work towards your goals.
What were you like growing up?
I was always playing sports, no matter the season I was competing or practicing. I grew up in a blue collar family and was taught at a young age that hard work will help to achieve life’s goals. My work ethic has transferred into my professional life and I continually seek ways to improve my skills and practice.
Growing up in a big Italian family, I was constantly in the kitchen either getting yelled at by my grandmothers or helping my mother cook a Sunday dinner. I have developed a passion for cooking and understanding the value of friends and family.
