Today we’d like to introduce you to Peter Richard.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up around the flooring industry with my father having his own cleaning & sales business. In college I had a measuring service to earn money between classes. That introduced me to Mal Elfman’s Flooring. Eventually I ended up working full time for Elfman’s Flooring &, other than a brief year I lived in NY, I have been here about 17 years. It my time here I have worked my way through just about every department & position.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We have been lucky to stay busy year round & through the market rollercoaster because we cover all types of flooring solutions in all segments of the economy. When the economy shifted down, we offered a versatile selection of material that we were still able to accommodate the current consumer & find suitable solutions. It is challenging trying to determine the next quarter’s focus, i.e. residential or commercial, soft or hard surface, etc., but we are able to remain fluid through the market adjustments.
Mal Elfman’s Flooring – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I would say the aspect that differentiates us from all others is our large inventory of stock carpet rool ends/remnants. At any given time, we have hundreds of options in a variety of colors, textures & sizes. We purchase large quantities of remnants at huge discounts & pass those savings on to the consumer. This is something few other companies can offer & even fewer in the wide selection we consistently have. Also, when someone is very specific in their needs & the remnants aren’t perfect, we have one of the largest showrooms of custom ordering options covering all flooring surfaces, carpet, hardwood, vinyl, tile, cork & LVT. These samples are not only residential products, but also commercial products for corporate, retail, medical or other commercial applications.
