Meet Donald Donnalson of Beantown Builders in Brockton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donald Donnalson.

Donald, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a second generation contractor. I learned the trade from step father. I worked for his company every summer starting at nine years old through college.

After law school I did a short stint practicing law but I quickly realized I preferred to be outdoors and my own boss so I started Beantown Builders.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been a smooth road nor has it been a straight path. I have tried everything from being a housing investigator at the Mass Commission Against Discrimination to a finance manager at Audi. I enjoyed it all and in many ways it all prepared me for what I do now.

There are always struggles in this industry. Many times because our industry is cyclical and dependent on the economy doing well we often experience feast or famine. However, as you grow and invest in your company you find that your issues evolve from increasing sales to managing growth. If you are doing it right then there is always something to focus on in order to make your business better.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a full-service general contractor, and this means that we manage every phase of your home or commercial remodeling or addition project. The process starts with developing a plan to accomplish your goals. When approved, we coordinate our team of licensed, skilled contractors and crews to complete the work in a logical, timely manner. That’s our elevator pitch but the distinct difference as told to us from our customers is that we are passionate, intellectual, and operational. We think it up and do it.

Personally, I think the brand range of disciplines that make up Beantown Builders gives us a diversity of skill sets that tend to be useful to our customers who never seem to need just one type of service. The key to our success is that we are part of the Boston Real Estate Development Group, which includes development, construction, and full service real estate services. A typical project for us often includes acquisition, design, build, and the ultimate disposition of the property. Therefore, rather than having to deal with several different entities, our customers enjoy the benefit of dealing with one but covering all these different areas.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was an introvert. I read books because we didn’t have cable television. I played sports with my friends. As I grew up I met a great mentor who trained me in oratory. I won the Boston Oratory and Massachusetts Oratory Competition but ultimately I lost interest and moved on.

I often found interest in many different things at one time. My mother use to think that I was fickle but now she thinks it helped me develop into who I am today.
