Meet Garth Donovan of Donovan Painting in Western Suburbs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Garth Donovan.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Garth. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up with a diligent father who had a second income during summers off teaching in the Boston Public School system, meant painting time. As a boy, I would pray for rain days, anything to keep the brush and roller at bay. I graduated from college and much to my father’s initial dismay began working in the labor trades. Whether it was working for tree cutting crew, junk removal, or demolition company, I was always breaking my back for someone else. Eventually I realized I could do better financially and spiritually working for myself as I had already began accumulating a client base generated from weekend wars and long summer evenings. A quick leap of faith later and I was up and running with a few trusted friends by my side. The operation has grew tenfold over the years, and I’m happy for those days when my father taught the value of a hard day’s work, even though at the time I would have rather been inside watching the rain pitter patter.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been anything but smooth and the challenges have been indicative of any small business. Hiring and cultivating a trusting, lasting relationship with quality workers always seem to be a revolving hurdle. Guys move on and start their own operation and your left looking for someone you can depend on to represent you well. End of the day though, the challenges that are most paramount are usually internal. Learning the lesson of never biting off more than can chew and sticking by your word will take you far. These days I like to set the pins up so I know I can knock them down.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Donovan Painting – what should we know?
My business specializes in exterior restoration projects, usually residential. We pay meticulous attention to preparation doing many homes that needed a good heavy scrape and sanding. Historical homes that need a lot of care are right up my alley. Providing a service to people for over 20 years you see and interact with all different personality types which forces you to broaden your communication skill set along the way. At this stage in the game, I am able to communicate with any type of client during the operation and keep them in the loop with our progress and schedule.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I am people person. People in general feel at ease around me, largely they know that if something “goes wrong” or happens off course during the job I will correct it. I feel this is largely the case due to the fact that I set out to do exactly what I say I will do…a simple guideline that will take you far and in turn create that trust which will work wonders for you.
