Meet Rachel Cohen of The Baker’s Rack

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Cohen.

Rachel, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been baking for as long as I can remember! I’ve learned so much from being in the kitchen with my mom growing up, my mentors (at the many restaurant/bakery jobs I have had), as well as from my chefs at the Culinary Institute of America (Greystone and Hyde Park). Growing up, my mom and I made every birthday cake, swim team pasta party cake (Go Knights!), and too many cookies to count around the holidays. In college, I worked at Sweet Kitchen and Bar, in Worcester, MA. While there, I was encouraged to follow my passion of baking and pastry all the way to St. Helena, CA for my first year of culinary school. California was a great experience, but I knew the east coast was the right place for me. I worked as a pastry intern at Topper’s at the Wauwinet in Nantucket and graduated from CIA Hyde Park the following year (2015). From there I hotel restaurants in Maine and Florida, and eventually ended up in Newburyport, MA working at a local bakery. At this bakery, I taught myself to decorate cookies, an art I never thought I would fall in love with! Through trial and error, I found techniques that worked for me and developed my skills in both decorating and baking. Two years later, I started my own company and will be celebrating one year of business in August!! Although we are best known for custom cookies, we also do cakes and pastries.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Everything has been pretty smooth so far! The Baker’s Rack actually started accidentally. When I left my job at the bakery, some of my previous clientele, friends and family asked if I would continue to do cookies for their events. A couple dozen cookies and cakes later, The Baker’s Rack for born. The community has been amazing and I’m looking forward to the future!

Please tell us about The Baker’s Rack.
The Baker’s Rack is a custom cookie and dessert company. Although we specialize in custom cookies (birthdays, showers, gifts, etc.), we also do cakes, cupcakes, and assorted pastries/breakfast items. We love helping people make the special moments in life even more memorable.

I love talking to people. I love supporting local businesses and making connections (both for business and personal). When you order from The Baker’s Rack, you don’t simply fill out a form and that’s the end of it. I want to answer any questions you may have from ingredients, design, my background in pastry, to food safety. We want the whole experience to be personal and enjoyable.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood is going to an overnight camp in the Berkshires, called Camp Eisner. I went and worked there for 14 years. I lived 10 months of the year for the 2 months I would get to spend going there. I made lifelong friends, as well as learned about my Jewish background/culture, life skills that would prepare me for college and beyond, and independence.

Pricing:

  • Custom cookies start at $3.50/ea.
