Check out Peter Bufano’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Peter Bufano.

Peter, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I do a lot of creative things, I always have. At age 17, I enrolled in Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Clown College. After graduation, I toured the country as a clown on that show, eventually playing in every major city in the country.

Now I’m a composer which is a very different artform. I score narrative media which includes film but I’ve always stayed close to the circus, always felt I belonged there. So now I write a lot of music for circuses.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I write music that tells stories; music for films, circuses, podcasts, TV; any narrative media. The circus is a lens through which we see ourselves. Music is a lens through which we see the circus. The circus arts have the unbound potential to tell our stories, lift our spirits, teach us to understand each other, and transform our world.

What I hope people take away is themselves. Ideally, people see themselves with better clarity and have access to their own emotions about it.

What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
I feel successful if my life allows me to hang out in coffee shops and read the New York Times. I know how ridiculous that sounds, but personal time to enjoy the world around me makes me happy. I like to have a few weeks between projects to just be alive.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Big Apple Circus, is in Boston until May 12 and playing Philadelphia from May 18-June 16. www.bigapplecircus.com

I’ve written a show called “The Invisible Discipline” which will be workshopped and staged by distinguished circus artists from far and near. We’ll be accompanied by students and faculty of Berklee College of Music and Boston Conservatory. The show will be open to the public July 19 at The Boston Conservatory Theater.
