Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy St Pierre.
Wendy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was working as a waitress at 47 years old and decided it was time for a change. I’ve always loved dogs and I’m very active with my own dogs so I decided to research professions working with dogs. I stumbled upon a help wanted ad on the internet requesting a dog bather in their salon. I thought why not try it and see if I like it. Turns out that I did. They trained me to be a groomer. And in the short three-year period that I was there I became the manager. On my days off I started doing house call grooming for friends family and guests from the restaurant that I was still working at. Through this whole process I had mobile grooming in my sights I knew it was what I wanted to do pretty much from day one. April of 2016 I purchased a trailer and a vehicle to pull it. May 1st 2016 I was on the road. Now one year later I have amazing clients and I’m the happiest I’ve ever been in my life
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think whenever you start a business it’s a little trying. Little things like insurance, a place to keep your trailer, the right vehicle to pull the trailer which was one of my downfalls. I now have a big truck so all is good. Otherwise it was pretty smooth but of course you go through the bumps of figuring out all the steps required every day. Like hooking up your trailer, making sure there’s water, learning how to backup and turn without damaging your truck. Etc.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Here Comes the Groom story. Tell us more about the business.
Well of course I’m a mobile grooming business. I pride myself on my knowledge of the Behavioral science part of the business. To me there’s nothing more rewarding than to start with a dog whose very anxious in the beginning to a dog that jumps right in my trailer and is happy to see me and understands he or she can trust me. I always work with kindness in my heart. I use aromatherapy and I keep my trailer a happy place to be. I believe my clients know this about me and love this about me. I also use the top-of-the-line products that are healthy for their skin allowing the skin to naturally produce its own oils instead of an artificial process. I’ve seen chronically itchy dry skin dogs turn into silky healthy non itching dogs. My clients love the silkiness of their coats and the delicious conditioner that I use as a finishing spray instead of cologne. It smells like candy. I’m also really big on educating my clients as far as working with me to keep their dogs healthy. I teach them how to brush and what brush to own. I let my clients know that I will not dematt a dog. To me it’s inhumane so I’ll start from scratch and they always understand.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
The luck part was stumbling upon the ad on the internet not having any intention of going into the grooming business. I just fell into it which I think is the best part.
