Meet Lucy Boogaerts of Gucy in Fenway

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucy Boogaerts.

Lucy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I can’t remember not being interested in fashion and making clothing. I was always creating as a kid, dozens of pillows with my first sewing machine, Barbie’s clothing, I made strappy red velvet sandals with cardboard and a stapler. I remember getting a stain on my favorite tee shirt with a rhinestone hello kitty graphic on it, so I sewed them into underwear and put hello kitty on the butt. Both my parents are artists, so it was inevitable for me to be anything else and fashion was I was most drawn to.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Yes and no, being a fashion designer is a dream job to a lot of people today and most people don’t become designers because it is such hard work. There are long hours, I have spent many nights in the studio. You also have to be a business person along with being the creative designer. There’s a lot that goes into being a designer, people don’t always realize but it’s so worth it to me. I would be so willing if it wasn’t what made me so happy.

Please tell us about Gucy.
Gucy is ready-to-wear meets avant-garde. The dream customer would be musical performers and editorial shoots. Gucy can also be styled in ways to make more casual looks. There are many layers and separates for various options. All the prints and embellishments are original and hand designed. The designs are loud, bold, strong statements, and colorful!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I started over, I wouldn’t change anything but I guess if I were to do something completely different, I would make films. At school, I majored in both fashion design and film video for a week before I realized it was way too much work. In a dream world, I would be able to do both but I’m not Tom Ford yet.
