Meet John Benson Seamans of The Benson Gallery in North Shore, Merrimack Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Benson Seamans.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The Benson Gallery is the fulfillment of a promise I made to my mother and sculptor Beverly Benson Seamans around 2003. That I would open a gallery to share her work with others. My mother passed away in Oct. of 2012 after a brief illness at age 84. I will say that she was kayaking and sculpting days before she entered the hospital. My dad got sick and after a year and a half he passed away in Jan. of 2014. My mother left me over 150 sculptures in all sizes and the unspoken agreement that I would find new homes for them. The first sculptures I sold went towards stabilizing and renovating the building which houses the gallery and the sculpture garden which surrounds it. My mother’s bronze sculptures are the foundation of the art shown accompanied by local: painters, sculptors, potters, photographers, and glass blowers. The gallery opened in the fall of 2016 and I have had the privilege of showing my mothers art and sharing her spirit with those who loved her and those who never met her. She said that her sculpture was her celebration of life.

Has it been a smooth road?
I would say yes it has been a smooth road in getting to where we are today. A lot of hard work but my mother was always speaking to me letting me know that she approved of all that I was doing to carry her legacy forward.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Benson Gallery – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
As I stated earlier, The Benson Gallery shows fine art. The sculptures of animals, birds, and children are what the gallery is best known for but we are still young only in our third year. I am most proud of the talent of the artists and the quality of the art that we offer and that sets us off from other galleries.
