Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Lopez Calderon.
Jasmine, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have over ten years of event planning and event coordination experience including Galas, conferences, weddings, kids’ birthdays, block parties, class reunions and more. In addition, my background includes over ten years of Communications work related to successful events and more recently DJing. In other words, more than putting on a great event, I know what it takes to create a great experience!
In 2017, while planning my son’s birthday party, I realized why many other families choose not to host birthday parties. It is because it can become a stressful experience, expensive, and for some, it is entirely overwhelming. “But birthday parties are too special to replace,” I thought, “I can help parents enjoy their children’s celebration without lifting a finger-apart from dialing me, of course.”
At that time, starting my own business had crossed my mind here and there. It just seemed out of grasp. By winter 2017, I decided to research opportunities. I learned that there is such a thing as a “mompreneur” and reached out to some. It turned out, I was ready. Starting my own business was well within my grasp and I went for it.
My strength is event planning, but I also very much enjoy designing event invitations, and DJing. I struggled at first with where/how I should focus my offerings. Ultimately, I chose to offer all three. The next issue was deciding on my business name and logo. Thankfully, I had friends and family to bounce ideas off of. I chose Two Ten Events because birthdays are a universal event, and it was while planning my son’s birthday that I started this adventure. I happen to love birthdays and mine is on February 10th.
By the start of summer 2018, I had my website and social media up and running. In fact, I had a few happy clients by then too.
I am now booking clients into the new year, including a surprise birthday party!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Overall, this has been a fairly smooth first year which I am extremely grateful for. It is thanks to setting realistic goals, holding myself accountable, and not being afraid to ask for help from my amazing family and friends.
I did struggle at first, internally wondering if this was something I could handle successfully. I have a son, could I manage to be a mother and a business owner? I don’t own a home or have significant savings, could I manage financially?
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Two Ten Events story. Tell us more about the business.
Two Ten Events offers event planning, DJ services, and custom card and signage design.
A “Jill of all trades,” I am always multi-tasking and thinking outside of the box. Stretch a dollar? No problem. Re-purpose content? Let’s “Jazz” it up! I take pride in offering high quality, budget-friendly, personalized services. It’s what sets me apart. Clients are pleasantly surprised at what I can accomplish for them within their budget.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
This year has been an amazing turn from what one might call bad luck. I’ve experienced many losses and hurdles in the past couple of years. Had I not taken each bout of bad luck as an opportunity for growth, I wouldn’t have made it this far. I have learned that it is not a matter of luck, but instead thoughtful bounce backs and deep gratitude.
Life doesn’t happen to us. It reflects us, ebbs and flows for us. That’s why I always say: live, love life. Or in the case of Two Ten Events: Live, love, celebrate.
