Art & Life with Mei Wu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mei Wu.

Mei, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
My story starts from the first time I picked up a pencil – I have always been a creative. It’s in the fabrics of my very being. I have started going to specialized art schools since I can remember, so it was no surprise to me that I completed a degree in Fine Arts.

Next to cultivating my love for art, growing up, I spent many springs and summers in botanical gardens. I frequented the Brooklyn Botanical Garden a lot, mainly because it was only a few trains stop away. I have my mother and my aunt to thank, really. It was there that I began my fascination with all things floral. My favorite of all the stops in the garden where the Cherry Blossoms. It always felt like a day’s dream – row after row of vibrant, yet delicate Cherry Blossom trees.

Looking back now, though I have always had formal training in art, I never would have imagined that I would come to be the founder of a small business. It makes sense now – I have always loved flowers. I find nothing more joyful than working with my hands and using my floral arrangements to truly transform any space or environment. Floral Design has because such a massive industry over the last decade, and I really feel like the community of artists are starting to really view floral work as interactive installations. At the end of the day, I hope my work continues to spread beauty – that it may cause people to pause, sit and consider the inspiration of nature in all of its intricacies.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I’m a Floral Designer – one that uses the floral medium to create work for weddings and events. I work with clients that are interested in booking me for their weddings, private events or styled shoots. It’s a blast! I absolutely adore working with people, and this medium has also helped me make sweet friends that I know will last.

Ultimately, my desire for my work is that it would provoke conversation of beauty and awe – that it would spark others to think about color, texture, and how the relationship between the two, can inspire our everyday. I create and spread beauty for a living – I don’t think it gets much better than that!

What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
This one truly makes me laugh – I can definitely relate to this one! Though being an artist can be lonely, (being cooped up in a studio working away, with little regard for the time and or sleep) as an extreme extrovert, I’m highly intentional about including others in my process. What that looks like for me, is meeting with clients over coffee, or creating more structure in my schedule so that I can make space to be social with others. Networking with other artists and meeting over a meal can be helpful too. These fellow artists don’t even necessarily need to work with the same medium you do! Hearing about others’ creative processes and bouncing ideas and ways to collaborate can be such a life-giving thing, and totally educational too.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Please visit my website and my social media accounts to view my work! That is where I share my latest. I also share my work and company, Bloom Native, with others through local pop-ups. I’m working on a project right now where I am collaborating with other business owners to host my first ever Floral Workshop. To support me and my work, show up, share the love with others who you think might love some fresh blooms, or would like to learn more about how to arrange for themselves! I promise it won’t disappoint.
