Meet Jepherson Castillo of Jey in Fenway

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jepherson Castillo.

Jepherson, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started taking pictures for fun with friends in middle school. It was a lot of fun just going out with them and coming out with cool outfits to capture on my iPhone 4. Later on, around the 8th grade, I was hungry to do more around the field of photography. I never really liked capturing the city if you want me to be honest, I always loved exploring as a kid with friends and capturing them in front of amazing views. But I really fell in love with concert photography the most thought. I was about 14 years old when I sneaked in my first show and it was Post Malone. I remember having people adjusting my camera settings for the lighting inside the venue and teaching me short tips on how to shoot a concert. Ever since that day, I loved the atmosphere of live music and capturing artist perform their art on a stage.

Has it been a smooth road?
No definitely not it was hard to convince parents as 14 years old to let you go to a nightclub or venue to take pictures. Some nights, I came back smelling like alcohol and obviously, I wasn’t drinking just being around all that beer in a venue, the smell can get stuck on your clothes, so that never made my situation better, haha. But other than that, I showed my parents the images I did capture the following day and they would love ’em, so it slowly got better and having them trust me going out. But getting inside the venue and working things out with the artist management was a huge learning process for me. Since I did start as a young kid, I didn’t know much of what I was doing or how to reach out to these people but slowly I was figuring it out and learning how important it is to keep relationships and building good ones with people. Relationships with people really go a long way and have made things very easy for me lately.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Well, everyone really knows me just for concert photography and urban street photography but mainly concert photography. I’m really proud of all the people I have attracted with my images and some of the people that send me pictures of my own prints on their college dorm or even in their house framed. That feeling is amazing, but I can say I am very proud of myself and on how much I have matured with this craft and I have so much more to show as well.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Boston is a great place and for a business like mine, it can get hard to get booked throughout the winter time just because of the harsh winter conditions but I did make it work sometimes. But I feel like LA would probably be the best spot to do a job like mine. I also probably wouldn’t recommend someone to start a business here as well although Boston is beautiful, it sometimes feels very slow. For improvements, there’s really not much to improve, I mean if it can bring spring and fall all year in Boston, that’d be amazing.
