Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Thompson.
Natalie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
The Peyton Co. was born shortly after the most beautiful surprise was, being our son. Filled with urgent desire to shift towards more of a health-oriented lifestyle, I began to fall back upon tried and true natural homemade products that proved to be highly effective. Our son was born with skin and allergen sensitivities, and I found a way to help him without the harsh chemicals and toxins that are traditionally used. I knew I was not the only one that was seeking alternatives, and I was right. We began in our humble kitchen and selling at local farmer’s markets. From there, we expanded and our products can proudly be found at stores, salons, spas, and boutiques nationwide.
We are proud to announce that we can now call seaside Warren, RI, our home for our flagship storefront located at 7 Child Street which is in the bustling heart of downtown. We opened our doors on June 16th, 2018 and we couldn’t be more excited of what’s ahead for us- our story is just beginning
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I feel like it would be safe to assume that if every single entrepreneur was asked if their process was smooth along the way, we would emphatically agree that is anything but. One thing I now currently practice as an entrepreneur is that I no longer classify situations as failures or struggles – I made a vow to myself to see every opportunity, every circumstance if you will, as an experience to be guided by towards growth, or a challenge that when completed, a proverbial shiny trophy in the guise of confidence, self-assurance, and fire is won.
I met many different challenges along the way, too many to address really, however, the most impactful ones that I feel would resonate with others are trying to understand and contend with a new mother’s guilt fueled by my working while being a stay-at-home mom and navigating that, finding the sweet spot on the scale that weighs between work life and home life, and streamlining my vision. These challenges were met with soft edges, and by that I mean I allowed myself some compassion, some patience, and endless chances to continually work towards my goals and happy places. It’s all a work in progress. Some of the valuable lessons I can take away and share with the world are to learn to be able to identify when you are tired and at an ultimate stress point, take a rest or else you will end up at a breakpoint. I have made the sacrifice of psychical health and mental health a few too many times due to complete lack of life balance, and I am *still* learning how to take a rest. I am proud to share that I am getting far better at it.
As for streamlining my vision, that is a steady battle that will always be fought on a daily basis, and I now know that is how I personally must address this. My mind is endlessly creative and my enthusiasm and intensity are my best assets, as well as an Achilles heel. Those traits sometimes trick me into overcommitting, losing sight of future pathways, and not being able to manage my projects in a timely manner. I just want to do it all and my biggest fear is that there aren’t enough lifetimes to enact all these plans! Major FOMO over here! My advice? Keep a written log of your ideas and assign them realistic timelines. This can really help to pull the trigger on projects too soon just because they are exciting, sparkly, which can be blinding when it comes to financing. By assigning timelines, you can see a natural progression that will make sense.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Peyton Co. – what should we know?
The Peyton Company was founded upon a desire to create beauty, body, and wellness products that are made with organic, sustainable, and local ingredients, and that are accessible and affordable. We have striven to create an end product that is highly desirable for the conscientious consumer, and that fits our customer’s needs. I would have to say we are known for providing our community with high-quality products, but more-so even, an education pertaining to not just the what, but the how with our ingredients. I make sure every single interaction is personal; my customers are the absolute best part of what I do. What sets us apart is the highly personalized experience, our sourcing practices, and the fact that we use concentrations of natural ingredients that are actually effective, unlike many brands in the natural beauty sector. Every single product that is created has an immense amount of my heart, integrity, and creativity in it, and I am proud to share them with the world.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
This is a truly intriguing question, I like it.
Concerning opportunities for women that they are well positioned for, I feel that there are ENDLESS opportunities in EVERY sector – there is an extreme abundance.
Being a woman, and an entrepreneur, my mind innately is tuned to be a problem solver, alternative solution seeker, as well as forward thinking. I feel that most women possess these traits (honed skills or not), due to gender assigned duties from childhood on. That being said, I think that women are especially well positioned to be entrepreneurs, leaders, disruptors, and adventurers. Most businesses are created to solve a particularly pressing problem, and who better a woman than to exact a solution!
