Today we’d like to introduce you to Joselyn Martinez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Joselyn. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My story began when I was 18 years old when I became an unwed, teen mom. I instantly became responsible for another human being and knew that he would be my why for years to come. I began my career as an accounting clerk for a manufacturing company and stayed there for almost 18 years. I was determined to provide better for my son and future children. I was determined not to become another statistic and provide a future that included rising above and being able to accomplish better than where I came from. I knew that the only way to climb the ropes in accounting I needed a degree. I was working full time and had two children, both boys, by the time I was 20, I returned to school.
It took me eight years, but in those eight years, I completed my associates, bachelors and masters degree. My achievement of attaining my post-graduate degree was exemplified with the distinction of Summa Cum Laude. I not only completed my degree but I am now an Adjunct Instructor for my alma mater. I worked full time and raised a family that had included a daughter by the time I was done. During that time, I also continued to climb the ropes in the same company I started with. I had moved up to the position of Controller and had the opportunity to travel that included going to Singapore and The Netherlands. While my career had been filled with many accomplishments and had fulfilled my goals of providing better for my children, the change in the structure of the company would lead me down a different, exciting path. I wanted to continue to help small business owners in the way my career started with the manufacturing company. I also wanted the opportunity to continue making an impact on the world and teaching my children that they can truly make a difference. In 2016, my passion for accounting and helping others led me to open my own business, Balance Financial Solutions. Being an entrepreneur is a scary concept but my passion and determination to be successful along with my reasons why continue to be my source of strength to overcome that fear.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It probably can’t be any farther from a smooth road. Being a teen mom has led to some of the hardest struggles, being responsible for a child while barely being able to make ends meet and trying to get a degree. Attending night school and online required a huge commitment to consistency, belief in myself that I could do it and giving up a lot of sleep along the way. I wanted to quit many times while getting my degrees because it was hard to find the time and find the strength. In becoming an entrepreneur, the biggest struggle is believing in myself, believing that I can do this. I find that being a woman and a Latina predisposes me to prejudices that aren’t fair. Because I am both, I somehow am not good enough. My mother, my only parent, was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimers, at age 48. It was a devastating blow to me and our family. To see my mother lose her sense of self with no control over it was beyond any word that could describe it. It was hard to understand, to witness and to share with my children. My mother died when she was 57, in essence, my mother died twice, once while she was alive and in death itself.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would have started school sooner and believed in myself that I could fulfill my dreams. It becomes difficult to see past the hard times when that’s all you see. When you are raised surround by a certain ideal, then you feel that there is no other way.
