Meet Suphoj Chancheaw of Bloom Couture Floral Studio in South End

Today we’d like to introduce you to Suphoj Chancheaw.

Suphoj, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My interest and passion in floral design started in my childhood. My grandmother passed on her exceptional skill in banana leaf arrangement, which is used in many religious ceremonies in Thailand.

After graduating from business school and working in marketing for 3 years, I considered the idea of opening a flower shop in Thailand, but decided to take an opportunity to explore the world by studying abroad. I came to the United States in 1998 and completed a Masters of Fine Arts in Architectural Studies from Columbia College Chicago. Although I am trained as an interior designer and have been working in this field for more than 10 years, I have always nurtured my broader interests in other art and design disciplines. I enjoy experimenting with form, texture, materials and color, which inspires me to create design concepts that emphasize simple and elegant aesthetics.

During my career in interior design, I created flower arrangements to enhance the design package we provided to clients, which rekindled my passion in floral design. At that time, the local design community began to take notice and I took this as an opportunity to refocus my creative efforts toward a successful business. I was very fortunate to open my floral studio and retail location, under the name Bloom Couture Floral Studio, in one of Boston’s historic neighborhoods, the South End, which also has been my home for over a decade.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Developing a vision for the business and a design aesthetic came easy to me, and in many ways my commitment to the studio has been a constant focus in shaping the business over the past two and a half years. Yet, getting the financial backing to get started, developing business infrastructure and practices and building a reputation and client base all required a significant investment of time and effort.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Bloom Couture Floral Studio is a floral design studio and retail shop that offers fresh cut flowers, arrangements for any occasion including private or corporate events to weddings of any size. We also offer a variety of house plants, succulent gardens and a selection of indoor bonsai trees. We are known for our ever-changing collection of “kokedama”, which are Japanese moss ball plantings. Finally, we offer classes in floral arrangement for small groups of all experience levels.

Our aesthetic draws on years of experience in luxury interior design and time-honored floral techniques. Every one of our bespoke compositions reveals the geometric beauty of natural forms expressed in sculptural and contemporary arrangements. This aesthetic is also reflected in the design of our retail shop, which clients refer to as “elegant”, “welcoming’ and “unique”.

We like to get to know our clients and work closely with them to create arrangements that are customized to their needs, whether it’s a quick bouquet to bring to a party or a bigger project of a wedding or special event.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in a very rural area in Eastern Thailand. As a child, I enjoyed building things, which provided an opportunity to explore my thoughts and learn how to design things. With the beautiful plants and sea around, it was easy to be inspired by the things I observed.
