Meet Africa Rubio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Africa Rubio.

Africa, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today.
I consider myself a citizen of the world. I’ve visited and lived in various countries, experiencing a lot of different cultures. I came to Boston looking for a place I could fit into and a sense of community. While living in Boston, I found Boston Women’s Market. BWM has given me purpose and allows me to work with incredible, creative, strong woman. Supporting and working with these women has motivated me to be more creative. It has helped to come to the decision to start back up WaterWheel Clothes&Jewels, which was started in Madrid, Spain. Boston not only has helped me gain back that sense of creativity but has given me endless opportunities to use that creativity outside of Boston Women’s Market and WaterWheel.

We’d love to hear more about your work. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am the social media manager for Boston Women’s Market. We promote the work and preserve a space for Woman entrepreneurs and artists in the New England area. We foster an environment of support and innovation for our community by hosting Marketplaces throughout the Boston area, spotlighting inspirational Woman and telling their stories, and providing tools to help Woman-owned businesses succeed.

As I said earlier, the incredible woman that I’ve meet and work with from Boston Women’s Market has inspired me to be more creative. WaterWheel is a clothing store that started in Madrid, Spain. I want to continue the work with WaterWheel that once started in Madrid, and bring it here. I’ve been inspired to continue this work because I believe that Boston Women’s Market and WaterWheel share a similar mission and values. I wouldn’t want to miss the chance to make it part of this community. Along with being a social media manager, I’m a stylist and interior designer. I style photo shoots and use my designer skills to stage house that has been flipped.

The most recent work I’ve done has been with Nicole Hailer Photography and FTB Properties, a Boston Real Estate company. I am also a full-time student. I am going to school to further my studies and become a gender studies graduate student. I have found a passion for yoga along with my journey here in Boston and I’m training to become a yoga sculpt teacher through Core Power Yoga.
