Meet Trailblazer Lois Levine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lois Levine.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Lois. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have worked in mental health for over 30 years as a Recreational Therapist. I have always worked with adolescents and adults on inpatient psychiatric units who have struggled in times of crisis whether it be with depression, anxiety, trauma, substance abuse or other mental health-related issues. As a therapist and educator, my role has always been to offer support and teach coping skills. My goal has always been to provide the client with resources and offer support in making positive changes to their lives. My group and individual work focus in the areas of wellness and life management, self-esteem, time management, leisure education, life skills, coping, stress management, relaxation skills, mindfulness, gratitude, forgiveness, cognitive therapy, DBT and communication skills.

My job, however, has never ended there. My work often extends into my personal life as well. Whether it was a family member, friends or even friends of family members, whoever was in need of support and guidance, I was the one they called. I was always everyone’s “go-to person”! Why? Probably, because I have always been compassionate and a good listener and with my years of experience in mental health I was always able to offer them the support and guidance they needed.

That brings me to Wellness and Life Coaching. For years, my colleagues have asked that I continue to be a resource to people outside the hospital who are in need of more support. The thought was that I could offer them the skills and resources they needed to help them stay well and feel good about themselves. I began my practice with that in mind. The goal was to help my clients find their way on their journey to wellness, to focus on their strengths and to use my knowledge to help them find balance and wholeness. I became a Certified Integrative Wellness and Life Coach through the Integrative Wellness Academy where I not only learned about life coaching overall but learned a lot about myself in the process. I became my own life coach which was part of the curriculum and I found practicing the skills that I was teaching others made my life balanced and whole.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not always been smooth, in any situation, there are always ups and down. For me, the challenge was should I do this now? As a woman in her late 50’s, I had to take a good look at my self and make sure that I wanted to move forward with coaching at this point in my life. The answer was clearly yes! It doesn’t matter your age, what’s most important is that when you find something that you are passionate about, the ups and downs are so worth it!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Lois Levine Wellness – what should we know?

I will work with them to help them heal core issues and negative patterns while empowering them to make changes in their life with effective tools, techniques, and specific action plans. I will introduce the client to different modalities that will help bring wholeness and harmony to their life and I will be there to support them, cheer them on and help them as we travel on this journey together. Integrative wellness coaches towards balance in your mental, emotional, physical and spiritual systems or what we call your MEPS.

As I mentioned before, I have worked for over 30 years in Mental Health as a Recreational Therapist. For the past 18 years, I have worked at Newton Wellesley Hospital and have been so fortunate to have surrounded myself with wonderful colleagues. This experience has been the foundation of my Life Coaching practice as it has given me incredible knowledge in all aspects of mental health as it relates to my practice.

My coaching is very flexible and can be done by phone, video call or e-mail, all at the client’s convenience.

Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
I feel so fortunate to have an incredible support team around me including friends, family, and colleagues. The resources are endless for life coaches. There are numerous conferences, retreats, and programs available that support networking and continuous education. There are private Facebook pages and supportive communities also available online. I would encourage coaches to continue to grow and learn but do be cautious and do your research when selecting authentic and reliable programs and communities.
