Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacqueline Meier.
Jacqueline, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I grew up in Andover, went to college in Boston and studied economics while taking electives in the arts. I worked for many years at in retail eventually becoming a buyer. I left that job and traveled extensively ending up on the west coast. I finally started to study to become a painter. I returned to NY to get an MFA in painting and be closer to my family who resides in Massachusetts.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I make paintings. I start by observing the world around me. I am most interested in man-made architecture contrasted with the organic natural world. I notice lots of small things. These seep into my consciousness and eventually make their way to my work. My inspiration is the world we live in both in our minds and the external one, which some people say is the same thing. Currently, I am intrigued by how plants and trees grow. I try to find their patterns.
I use color intuitively. I often try to narrow my choice of pigments so that the painting holds together. I am curious and try to make colors without names. I hope people find my paintings compelling to look at. I would like people to take whatever they want from them. There is nothing you should know that isn’t already in the painting.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
The biggest challenge facing artists today is how to make great work. There are so many artists and less and less galleries. It is difficult to make and sell work to support one’s passion and take the risks necessary to make amazing work.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I have a website Jackiemeier.com. My studio is in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, I enjoy visitors. You can find me on Instagram @jacqmeier.
