Meet Brian Baker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Baker.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am a Baltimore Maryland artist, a MICA alumnus with a painting major, and my website is soulforms.com. The exhibition I had at the Bruce Lurie Gallery in Culver City, Los Angeles last summer was my first visit to the west coast. Most of my shows have been in the Baltimore area, including the Whole Gallery, Metro Gallery, and Art Scape. My artwork is mostly large-scale acrylic and mixed media canvases, with mythological and spiritual subject matter done in an experimental, fantastic realist style. I am currently looking toward moving to Miami, FL.

Please tell us about your art.
My paintings are very personal and narrative, expressing my spiritual journey in a variety of symbols. My primary body of work is made up of dozens of larger than life scale canvases and boards painted with mixed media. Executed in a personalized style of visionary realism, my compositions are influenced by a variety of ancient and modern art forms. Informed by religious icons and archetypal figures from multi-cultural spiritual backgrounds, my images are inclusive of many saints, deities, and other spirits of the sacred traditions. The theme most explored in my work is the interwoven unity of divine personalities and of the union of souls with our maker. In my search for God, I found a complete freak show within myself.

I feel that my imagery, being an extension of myself, is a testament to the journey of human spirit. My body of artwork, like my own physical form, may be uniquely mine; however, it shares with all in the transpersonal aspect of the human spiritual experience. That is the pool of energy from which I feed and to which I feel drawn into irresistibly, expressing all manner of pain and pleasure in the struggle to define selves through the ouroboros, homeward bound to the self of all.  Share this testament of my particular mystic path as influenced by the many who came before me and who walk with me now. I hope to serve as a sign, as my work to is filled with symbolism of the deities and spirits, transcending our sleepy materialistic condition, to look deeper to the heart of things, and to awaken new visions.  My discipline to the detailed art of painting is an act of meditation and produces icons of my soul’s forms as an offering to my maker, and to my fellow beings.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
I offer my artistic skills to do commissions, usually portraiture, and also custom designs for murals, signs, and tattoos.
