Today we’d like to introduce you to Dianne Pyburn and Heather Reda.
Dianne and Heather, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Both of us have started on this journey while maintaining our first careers. Has it been crazy at times and stressful and overwhelming? Yes… but also completely 100% worth it!
When they say it takes a village, our village is pretty awesome! Dianne has been in retail for the better of 15 years! She lives in Norfolk with her husband, two boys, and four dogs! Heather does a job that only a few can do. She is a pediatric nurse working overnights on the weekends. This never stops her from going out bright and early the next morning though to find our latest picks!
Heather lives on Lake Archer in Wrentham with her four kids! While we keep the wheels turning on our day jobs, we decided to fuel this burning desire to bring our creativity to life, and it has truly turned out to be a meant-to-be partnership!!!
We started almost three years ago in the basements of our homes, doing separate businesses and not knowing each other! I started a floral and event design company that gave back to an animal rescue. (We still do this – 10% for any event booked with us goes to the dogs!) I was dreaming daily of opening a store of my own.
Heather started by using her crazy amazing decorating skills and eye for transforming houses into warm and inviting homes. She also shared the desire to curate design in a bigger capacity and showcase this in a store of her own. Flash forward to a photography class where we met. We started helping each other in aspects of our own businesses. We were having so much fun bringing our vintage finds into farmhouse design!
After lots of prayers, we took a leap of faith into our first space together. We were confident right from the start that this is what we were meant to be doing… together! We quickly realized we were a strong team! Our vision and eye for detail truly complimented each other in all of the events that we designed.
Just a few months later, we expanded into a second location and were privileged enough to be vendors at our first market – the Pro.found market. Our current location in Norfolk literally just fell in our lap! There were so many signs right from the start that led us to KNOW that this store was meant to be! It was born out of a lot of hard work and love for what we do!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We believe that the road with lots of turns, hills and the occasional pot-hole makes for the best adventure! Just like everyone else time management has seemed to be our biggest struggle. We can see so many growth opportunities … if we just had MORE TIME.
We both value our families over everything, and so we take the time we need to nurture our children… while convincing them that working at mommy’s store is SO FUN! We love that this is OUR story to write and our adventure to navigate.
We have seen time and time again how bumps in the road have only made us a stronger and more united team!
Please tell us more about Only Prettier Design.
We are so proud of all we have to offer! We are a floral and event design business that specializes in custom signage and home decorating. We are so thrilled to now also offer a gift and home décor boutique! We are most proud of the road we’ve gone down, and we’re excited for the road ahead. We truly love the journey of the unknown and bringing old and vintage along the way with us.
What sets us apart? In regards to events and weddings, we are a one stop shop! We offer so many aspects to help simplify your big day… all the way from paper, to custom signage, to flowers and decor! We also have a passion for animal rescue and give 10% of events to @luckymuttanimalrescue.
In our store, we truly strive to bring you products with a purpose! Many of the companies we choose to carry also share our passion and purpose to give back.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Growing up in Michigan amongst the endless cornfields and hay bales, we always got away to the lake to go camping in the summer! My three siblings and I rode our bikes to the candy store, and my dad taught us to waterski…. something I still love to this day!
Dianne grew up in Hull, MA and there are too many memories to pick just one coming from a beach town! I mean having the opportunity to see the sunrise and the sunset on the beach every single day is beyond rewarding and something I totally took for granted!
However, truly my favorite childhood memory is from my Nana’s house. We had family dinners every single Sunday! The dinner was always incredible and having time with my cousins was a blast! We got away from this as everyone moved away, but this is the number one tradition I’m trying to bring to life with my own kids!
