Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlin Sherlock.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Caitlin. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I believe it all started when I was about ten years old. I’ve been riding horses most of my life, and I quickly adopted the role of photographing my friends at horse shows around that age. I always was the person at the family parties who was given the camera to get candids. Fast forward to high school, in 2005 I was the senior yearbook photographer, and everyone thought it was magical that I could set up the camera for a self-portrait, but I had to because I won “Best Eyes” in the superlative category! Way before today’s selfies.
I went to college in Upstate NY for Equine Business, and after a semester in a place where it can snow nine months a year, I knew it was time to come home, and I enrolled at Umass Dartmouth cramming in 4 years of Photography school into 3 to ensure I graduated on schedule. Since then I have tried my hand at portraiture, weddings, product photography, sporting events, art gallery jobs and more.
And finally here I am, nine years post-college, and I found my home doing real estate/sports photography.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I would say things have been more of “learning experiences” over anything else. I have had many small-time jobs over my years trying to find something that felt right, and in the beginning, I interned at a few art galleries in the area, and I had to leave mainly due to male ego issues.
And also my first “real adult” job ended abruptly after four years because of my position being outsourced for cheaper labor. It was earth-shattering to me at the time. I felt like a failure and that the industry was kicking me out before I even got started.
After that, I had a handful of odd jobs until I found my current situation of photographing real estate five days a week.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Caitlin Sherlock Photography – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
One thing I love about photography is that it grows with you. Some years it takes a backseat, and others it’s the shining star that you need. It’s a skill I can always call upon. I have tried my hand at about any subject under the sun, and currently, the focus is on real estate and sporting events. Two polar opposite subjects I know!
Typically these days though I photograph real estate for sale during the week and do sporting events and portraiture on the weekends. My strong suit for sure is finding moments within the framed photo. I love vignettes, and I also try to use the background in my favor for both real estate and portraiture.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans for the future are to keep building my network and always be looking for the best angles in the most amazing locations.
Networking is the foundation of building a great business, and I believe as long as you deliver great work, the feedback with come back to you in some way.
