Meet Mike Tarara of Music Matters DJ & Party Services in Metrowest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Tarara.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Mike. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I’ve always been involved in Music in some way or another.

Growing up I spent hours listening to the radio with headphones, moving up and down the dial to hear everything.

From there my love of Music branched towards performing on trumpet, guitar, piano, and singing. My entrepreneurial spirit took over in 1998 when I first created Music Matters DJ & Party Services. From singing at karaoke bars to hosting karaoke nights, my DJ career began.

After a few years, I started incorporating more services such as Live music. As time passed, I introduced more and more services. Our Photo Booths are always adding to the fun with simple backdrops or our never-ending green screen ideas. Uplighting played a huge upgrade presence in making our events unforgettable. With Live music, you can have the best in Acoustic Solo Performances of Top 40 songs from all Decades. I play over 2500 Covers. Want a Full Band? The Music Matters Band can rock out any party.

Today we have the best in Sound with our Bose speakers and setup. Our extras really make the party. Most importantly, It’s the coordination of your event that really sets us apart from the competition. I make sure all vendors are on the same page, and the order of the events move smoothly throughout the night.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Like any new venture, you learn along the way. Yet with a full grasp of music knowledge, a performance background in Acting and Music, there hasn’t been many struggles. Every now and then when I first started, I would see ways to improve my services, and that’s how the machine becomes fine-tuned.

You fix the way you announce a Wedding couple, learn what info to know ahead of time to be prepared for the Birthday entrance, learn how to negotiate, network with other professionals to gain perspective and growth.

There’s always some struggles but if you’re motivated and professional about what you’re passionate about you’ll be able to get through anything without anyone noticing.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Music Matters DJ & Party Services – what should we know?
Our specialty is coordinating and running your event to exceed your standards. We keep things running smoothly while looking for other ways to assist in the night. We organize your Wedding party to line up and show them how to talk on a microphone for their speeches.

We work with the venue and caterer to ensure that the timeline is moving smoothly. If we have a hiccup in the time, (bride needs to change her dress, someone has to use the restroom, the grandparents are not here yet) we manage the timeline for you and make sure it all gets done.

We also go find your grandparents for you, so you’re less stressed. We go that extra mile to do whatever it takes to make sure your event goes smoothly and stress-free. Playing music is easy but what do you play? Reading the crowd is our specialty too.

Anyone can play the latest hottest dance song or the best throwback jam but knowing when to play a song, what flows well after another song, these are the moments that we create that help you dance all night long.

Our live music is the best! Great music selection, great musicians and we also take requests! We can learn your genre for the next event. Rock, Blues, Country, Reggae, you name it, we’ll play it. Want a great mix, that’s our favorite! If you’re looking for just an Acoustic One Man who can sing and play everything, we have that too. With over 2500 songs, 3 part harmony and two guitar sound, we’ve got you covered.

Photo Booth with all the props you need, digital gallery and on-site prints. We also have Green Screen backgrounds, Scrapbook with prints and messages from guests and of course our well- dressed Attendants. Our Booths are clean and classy (no worries about PVC pipe construction or huge setups).

Our Uplighting are L.E.D lights, they don’t get hot, and they are wireless. Adding to any event, they will make your night absolutely beautiful and unforgettable. Not to mention during dance time they will dance with colors too! We have great clients because we treat them the best way we can. Fun Fun Fun! With lots of ambiances, great music and attention to detail.

We’re always adding great new services that can make the most out of our client’s events. A quick example we added Imagine That-Face Painting out of Millis a few years ago. Amazing face painters that our private parties love.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I started this business back in 1998 with my friend Kevin Braun. We grew up together, and we sang karaoke a bunch. One day we decided we could make money on the other side of the karaoke table by starting up a DJ business. So after multiple name ideas and researching of equipment, we started Music Matters.

We invested our time in learning from other local DJs. Mostly it was trial and error on simple gigs. Taking a 50s car show night and learning the ropes of playing music was our way.

I’ve always had very supportive parents and family which made my transition into this new career very comfortable. My amazing wife, Maryland, continuously gives 150% with support, organization and love. I’m pretty lucky to have all that and be able to give my all with every event I do.
