Meet Jorge Lopes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jorge Lopes.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jorge. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In a way, I have always been into acting, even before I knew it. But if I have to pinpoint the moment that I was truly bitten by the acting bug—I must have been 15 or so—and I was asked by my high school teacher to represent the school in an after-school program at the Roxbury Community College. In the program, I met Professor David Coleman, a drama professor at the college, and he gave me my first introduction to writing and acting.

I acted in ‘The Deadly gift,’ which was a play that we wrote that dealt with a teenage boy who was dealing with the fact that he had been infected with H.I.V and he accidentally passed it on to his girlfriend. After the play ended it’s run Professor Coleman had me audition ‘Listen Up’ a WGBH project about teens dealing with the street life. I was cast in the project and after I saw the final project I was bitten.

I started my professional acting career after I met Tasha Smith and Angela Basset. Angela gave me an hour of coaching in acting and after she was done Tasha came up to me and told me that I have what it takes to be a leading man in the industry and that I needed to train with Susan Batson. I didn’t know who Susan was at first so Tasha took me to Susan’s office and told me to sign up and begin my training and I did.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been a really bumpy road. I’ve had to make some tough choices to stay on the path of acting. The hardest choice was to move to NY. In the process of leaving for NY, I had to leave my daughter behind with family members. It was one of the toughest choices that I had to make. It broke my heart.

While in NY training I had to go to my deepest darkest pain to find the depth of every character that I will create. There were times that I didn’t want to go there.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’m a method actor. My specialty is in acting in the film. I’m also a producer. I’ve produced several projects.
