Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Lee.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
A natural medium, my first experiences with an inherent capacity to communicate with the great beyond began in earliest childhood. Growing up in an old Victorian and coming from a big Irish family with a father who was orphaned at a young age, there were no shortage of energy to perceive and spirits to communicate with in the formative environment of my early youth. The ease and naturalness with which I experienced this phenomena was in direct contrast to how it was received by everyone else. In short order, I sort of accepted two things: that I was in touch with ghosts, and that it was far from normal.
This dichotomy had a mixed effect: it rendered me unsuccessful at blocking the gift of “ghosts” out entirely, yet reluctant to fully embrace it. Jettisoning “the gift” in an attempt to feel and be normal, those loved ones passed to Spirit never truly receded from my life and awareness. At certain times, they would be sure to come through and communicate significant messages, alert me to coming experiences, and want to share the love with those who survived them. Embracing a commitment to normalcy, initially, I never saw myself as a career medium. Frankly, being a medium was so normal to me, and so discouraged by others growing up, I really didn’t realize it was a thing! I kind of figured that if you talked to dead people (I knew I couldn’t be alone in doing it), that it just happened to you; and if you didn’t, that you were either completely unaware/unbelieving or avoided it like the plague! Little did I know at the time, that there was a great need and a great reward!
At first, I slowly and inadvertently developed a following, branching out from friends and family who knew personally or through word of mouth that I had – and was happy to share – this lifelong gift. Other than that, I mostly kept it to myself, like the sacred secret that I thought it was, very much in keeping with my “act normal” obsession. If you know me, you know I can never act normal! But back then, you couldn’t stop me from trying!
My Irish family, who I traveled frequently to visit, embraced my readings, always encouraging them with either belief and acceptance, a willingness to chance or cavalier humor. I am eternally grateful for this willing engagement, as I am convinced that it helped to keep the connection strong and the passion alive, as well as helped to evolve my practice and process naturally through continued repetition.
As time progressed, and the volume of readings accumulated internationally, I realized more and more how rewarding it was for people to receive the warmth, comfort, love, healing, and closure from their loved ones in Spirit. In addition, I noticed more and more how much peace, perspective, and energy these spirit sessions left me with, as well as the loved ones who were receiving the messages. The more I realized these blessings, the more I advanced from merely accepting to fully embracing my medium life. The more I went with it, the more it grew, and it all just expanded from there.
Ten years into being a professional medium, I would never look back. I can’t say it has been an easy path, but it has absolutely been an enriching and amazing one, which has many times filled me with awe! The journey is the adventure. I feel this resonates for so many entrepreneurs, particularly those in professions that have evolved from their personal passions and God-given gifts. I’m grateful to be among the legion of those who share their calling with their communities as a part of the rich fabric of our vivid, diverse, and talented world!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Well, the whole talking-to-ghosts bit has always been mostly smooth. The rest, not so much! I had a hard time fully embracing the gift in my desire to be normal. I didn’t realize there were resources out there for me! Somehow, it had eclipsed my realization for a very long time that there were a lot of mediums in the area, and opportunities to connect to that community for advice, support, and a sense of belonging. Also, with starting the business, it had for so long always seemed to come to me. Despite being so reluctant at times, especially initially, there were always individuals reaching out, searching, who somehow managed to find me.
When I embarked fully on the business aspect, clientele built and flowed – to an extent. It became so challenging to manage a full-time job and a burgeoning full-time business, to the point that I could no longer do both. So, I chose my gift, my passion, my service to the world; my medium work! Once the choice was obvious, it was easy. However, once I made room for it, I was surprised that business didn’t pick up speed immediately in the way I imagined, which was the way it seemed to be going already. Despite the stress and pressure of having a full-time job and a virtually full-time business together becoming impossibly demanding, and that the requests and clientele were steadily growing with essentially very little effort on my part, developing a full practice still took dedication, commitment, focus, and most of all: time.
When it became continually too stressful to do both, I decided to go full time in my business exclusively, and that was when the real work really began. In consideration of these combined aspects, I definitely have some advice! One, if you have a natural gift and ability, it is there for a reason. Look to see if it keeps popping up in your life and if life events circle back to it. If you develop a passion to match, you know you are on the right track! Don’t question your passions – answer them. Most often a passion is a calling, and even in the instances when a passion doesn’t surmount to your personal path or life purpose, it will absolutely inform your discovery of yourself and your mission. If you are both capable and passionate about something, this is a true gift and it will enrich your life – and those of others – if you allow and trust it. So, trust yourself and your gifts. Don’t worry about being normal – if you’re not, it’s to fulfill a need in your own special, talented way. And what’s normal, anyway? Flavor is what makes life interesting!
Also, whatever comes up in your life, know that you’re not alone. Reach out and seek out like-minded individuals! Seek and you shall find. Finding a community will not only give you a sense of belonging but it will also fill you with new friends who can point you in the right direction, provide more information, help you with your questions, yearnings, struggles, and be a blessing of shared experience. This goes for both your business – your particular calling – and for your business as in the business aspect itself! By the same token, as any young businesswoman will find, being an entrepreneur is really two jobs: what you do, and doing it. For example in my case, being a medium, and being an entrepreneur! Know that the entrepreneur journey is a personal voyage and growth experience all by itself! Also, know that there are resources, help, and communities out there for this too. Other women entrepreneurs have helped me so much; personally and professionally! The help is there for you, as well as the reward of being able to share and help with others. Finally, realize it takes time. I didn’t even intend to be a full-time medium or sole practitioner, back when I embarked on practicing professionally! I was fortunate so much of it came to me over time, but when I decided to go full time, further growth was slow (but steady). Trust yourself, believe in your mission, and don’t give up. It does take time, and there are absolute challenges along the way. It’s not a question of if, it is a fact that you will get through them if you trust your calling, give yourself time, be patient and committed, and seek out help and resources along the way. I firmly believe if it’s meant to be, it will be, and if you have a passion and purpose that you are committed to fulfilling, that in and of itself is meant to be, right there.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Erica Lee Medium – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
As an intuitive medium, I do a couple of things; particularly, relay messages of love, healing, guidance, and communication from Spirit. Clients come to me for spiritual guidance, intuitive advice, information to inform and assist in their decisions, and especially: to hear from those loved ones who are still very much present, though they happened to be passed away. Among these offerings, Spirit communication is the specialty that I am particularly known for. Oftentimes, in a typical Spirit session, loved ones will gather to share cherished memories, details of their lives, clues about their personality and passions, and other descriptions of their experience. Spirits often relate what they’ve seen of our world since their passing, and details of the everyday lives of those they love here among the living. I personally feel so fortunate to bear witness to Spirit continually exemplifying that they are still current, aware, active and present in our everyday lives, and of the love for us that they so readily and enthusiastically share. Closure is experienced, healing is felt, and miracles happen! Messages of encouragement, hope, guidance, and love are offered, and many many recipients of Spirit messages reveal feeling uplifted and comforted as a result of the experience. I feel blessed to be a part of the contact and am deeply honored with a sacred responsibility to act as a vehicle for such connection between worlds. Beyond that, what sets me apart is also what I am most proud of: my commitment of service to humanity, not the least of which through my spirit sessions every day, but also extended through charity work, and continued participation in scientific research.
Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
Does my childhood reveal any clues about my current work? Absolutely! Two old adages that are dear to my heart are, “life is learned backward, but must be lived forwards,” and “hindsight is 20/20.” Both of these are a true testament to my childhood experience informing my adult occupation. One could never ask for a better living example of foreshadowing! Evidence of my future as a medium was readily apparent in my past as a child. My story began then when I was talking to Spirits in my Victorian home, asking my deceased grandmother for help on my science exam, and feeling the Virgin Mary and Jesus were speaking directly to me. Somehow, at age four I knew that my parents were taking my dog to be put down, around the same time when I knew it was the last-ever time (in this life!) that I would see my great-grandmother alive. Beg your grandmother to take you to the cemetery instead of going to the playground and getting an ice cream? Yup. I was SO that kid!
Culturally, and from the perspective of everyday life, being Irish in Boston pretty much ensures that there is always a wake or funeral to go to, and go to them, we did – even as children. One grandmother called the obituaries “the sweepstakes” and the other called it “the race pages.” Totally normalizing death, for better or worse, I was made familiar with this natural transition, even from earliest memory.
Growing up right in the city, I consider the early experience of a rich urban environment as a great asset to being both a medium and a businesswoman. Having direct and constant access to such a large group of people, diverse in every way, is such an asset if you embrace it. Living in the midst of such a pastiche of young, old, rich, poor, every level of education, and every color of the rainbow gave me such a passion for people – alive and dead. Additionally, it helped me to be open and compassionate to all people, which set me up for a strength of being able to relate to everyone. This is definitely helpful in tapping in spiritually and psychically to all levels of life experience, as well as having a receptive touch with the customer service experience. Some signs of being independent and creative were evident in childhood too, two traits that are not necessary but definitely indispensable in the life of an entrepreneur. I was always embarking on new projects, following the beat of my own drum, and always continuing on in search of my own way. These are character strengths that are a definite help to me in searching and in persevering in every way today.
