Meet Trailblazer Elizabeth Caron

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Caron.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Everyone has something that makes them come alive. Something that is all-encompassing. Something they research for fun, spend their spare time perfecting, and relentlessly dream about. For me, that was snowboarding.

When I was about eight years old, my parents brought me to Warren Miller’s annual ski film that premiered around the world. I thought it was just a movie, maybe some kind of drab documentary about the history of skiing. Well, it was anything but. This movie brought together this animated group of ski enthusiasts, professional skiers and riders who hung out in the crowds to sign posters and give out free season passes along with skis and snowboards. You would get a handful of free ski passes just for showing up.

When the movie started, the crowd was roaring. This was confusing to me as all I knew were traditional movie theaters where one sign of a cell phone light could send you packing from the teenage movie usher. Here, multiple levels of balconies came alive while frisbees flew and free shirts were tossed as the sound of Warren Miller’s narrative flooded the room and a screen full of adventure filled the theater. It wasn’t just entertainment, it was a celebration.

It made any non-skier want to go out right then and there to buy a set of skis or a snowboard. It was then I knew I wanted to make people feel the way that I felt on that night. The way that we all felt, and to this day, I have yet to miss a showing. I didn’t know it then, but that was the official start of my film journey.

Since then, I have taught myself as much as I could about production, and have been a media producer for the University of Connecticut for the past four and a half years while building my video production business and getting my master’s degree on the side. My business has allowed me to travel around the world to places I never thought I’d go, and meet some unbelievably amazing and inspiring people.

I recently graduated and left my full-time position to pursue opportunities to give people the feeling that the Warren Miller films give me. I strive to create a similar feeling of love and celebration through wedding documentaries that tend to stray from the traditional video. Every chance I get, I try to find that element that any stranger can watch and feel connected and inspired by. I’m right at the beginning of this fascinating new chapter in my life, and I can’t wait to keep building it!

Has it been a smooth road?
Overall, I am very lucky. Of course, I have my own struggles as anyone running their own business would, but I feel like I have been blessed with a wonderful and supportive family as well as the ability to make decisions and see them through. However, for a long time, I was waiting for permission to make my own waves because I never wanted to let anyone down. That made me very hesitant to stray from the security of my 9-5 where I had a nice salary, a cushy pension, and great health benefits.

I cannot stress enough that what other people think is right may not be what is best for you. Sometimes you have to ignore the advice of your friends and loved ones to really make something happen. I was told that the photo and video market was far too oversaturated of a field to pursue. It would be too competitive or too hard to make a respectable living. The thing was, I wasn’t out there. I had no idea if I could make an impact unless I pushed myself to do it. No one out there has my personality or my style, and that’s the beauty of it all. Each one of us has the opportunity to offer a completely unique experience to our clients.

That being said, you will offend people. Your service will be too expensive, too overdone, too different, or take too much time for some people. Your product won’t be for everyone, and that’s a great thing! You’ve got to be okay with people talking about what you’re doing for better or worse. If they’re talking about it, you know you’re doing something important. You are never too young to start doing great things, don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and start showing people what you’re capable of.

We’d love to hear more about Elizabeth Eve Productions.
Professionally, I am a video producer, but I am also a self-starter, a storyteller, a risk taker, and someone who is always looking for that extra something out of life. We only have one to live, and I believe in making it count.

I love bringing a high energy to every event. Production is both a serious and light-hearted process, and while I believe there are a time and place to be all business, I just love being part of the crew. Sometimes you’ll find me ten feet up in a tree or even waist-deep in the ocean to get a unique shot. I have no issues running through streets or climbing up cliffs with loads of equipment to capture someone’s moment.

While being “professional” is often associated with a very calm and businesslike manner, I like to associate professionally with being trusted. It’s a huge part of the experience when I’m out on a shoot or editing a product, and I think it’s earned through authenticity. Instead of focusing on appearing perfectly trained, I just focus on being real and wholly myself, which in turn helps my clients feel like they can be completely themselves as well. Then I observe. I listen very carefully to their stories throughout the day and try my best to get a sense of who they truly are.

People often assume I already know exactly which clips I’ll be using after a shoot. The thing is, I don’t just use the best slow-motion beauty shots that were taken that day. There is no formula or pre-determined look or feel to my videos. Every project I have, I work very hard to build a story that not only shows the energy of the day but a true representation of each couple. I want people who may not even know this couple to feel everything they feel. That result doesn’t come with a templated project, everything is completely custom. If someone is trusting me with telling their story, I don’t take that responsibility lightly.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I think women are well positioned for every opportunity! Women are inventors, educators, creators, coders, healers, leaders, influencers… whatever inspires her is what she is well positioned for and should chase!

I see so much support now more than ever of women supporting community over competition and it’s truly amazing. There is so much support even in male-dominated industries like my own. Women can bring a whole new perspective to the table, and I think that it’s recognized and appreciated. It seems as though women now more than ever is respected across the board.
