Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Lane.
Amy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
During High School, I had the opportunity to take sewing lessons. It was at that time I fell in love with sewing and making garments. After about two years of lessons, I began teaching Sewing Summer Courses at Laura’s Sewing School in Arlington, MA. I learned a lot by teaching others to sew. During my Junior year of high school, I took a Fashion Design introductory course at the College of Fashion Design on Newbury Street located in Boston, MA.
After graduating from High School I went to Gordon College. A small liberal arts college on the Northshore. After one year, I decided to transfer to MassArt to continue my studies in Fashion Design. I recently graduated with Departmental Honors from MassArt located on Huntington Ave in Boston, MA and began my journey of selling my designs on Etsy and my business Facebook page.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There was always this little voice in the back of my mind whispering, “you’re not good enough” or “what kind of career is this, there’s no money in your field.” However, I kept pushing through the struggles, mentally and literally. It’s been slow. But, I didn’t expect to be a hit right off the bat. And, I wouldn’t have wanted to be.
I think the most rewarding part of my career is when I do make it. It will be then that I can say, “I did it.” And prove that little voice in the back of my mind wrong. Don’t ever let the struggle of “making it” dampen your parade. Learn to dance in the rain, embrace the journey, and bask in your accomplishments. It will be a sweet victory. Trust in the process.
We’d love to hear more about your business.

What were you like growing up?
Fashion and Art have always been a part of my life. My parents are very supportive. They say I’ve been choosing my own outfits since I was a toddler. Mixing and matching pieces that had been purchased as ensembles. I never liked to match. I remember falling in love with fashion magazines in middle school.
Folding over the corners of the pages I liked most. I used to daydream of becoming the next “it” designer. I also had interests in athletics participating in sports such as soccer and tennis. However, they didn’t hold much ground to my other interests. In high school, I decided to quit sports altogether to focus on my career in Art and Fashion.
