Meet Carin Doben of Carin Doben Art

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carin Doben.

Carin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 1985 I founded ArtQuest Programs, an art history based creative thinking program for schools in Massachusetts. I taught until 2012 when I retire and turned the business over to a colleague. I had always enjoyed sketching and taken studio art courses as a pastime.

I enrolled in two classes that changed my life. One was at the MFA and the other at Montserrat College of Art. Since 2012 I have been painting consistently. I am a member of several art associations and groups representing abstract artists. I exhibit my work and continue to study.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Art is a struggle for every artist, even the most accomplished and successful. Actually, there is an exhibit I am involved with currently, titled “Why is Art So Difficult”.

It is being curated by an internationally known artist (who I studied under), Bernd Haussmann. I am included in this show, which opens September 29th, at the King Hooper Mansion which houses the Marblehead Art Association.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Carin Doben Art – what should we know?
As an artist of six years, I am proud that I have worked hard to created a body of work. I have been accepted in numerous juried exhibitions. My paintings are unusual and my style is abstract.

In this area, abstract art is not as popular as traditional realistic subjects ie, landscapes, seascapes, figurative or still life. One of my goals, as an art historian and former educator, is to expose and to educate the public regarding contemporary art.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
To succeed as an artist you must find opportunities to exhibit your work. When I have shows I spend a lot of time on public relations. My art is truly a reflection of me and takes an ability to explain it to my audience. I make myself available for studio visits and I am always happy to answer questions.

As an artist, you must come to terms with rejection. I have been fortunate to have my work all received and I am grateful for each sale.

Pricing:

  • My work sells from $200 – $1,000.
