Meet Bryan Castro of BKC Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryan Castro.

Bryan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am originally from the Dominican Republic but moved to the United States in 2002. Ever since I was a kid I was fascinated with drawing. I would always draw my favorite cartoon characters or make silly doodles on my school notebooks.

As time went on I knew that I wanted to do something that involved art, so I went to an art high school in Lawrence Massachusetts and it was there that I found out about Graphic Design and loved the work that I was doing. When looking for colleges I was fortunate enough to attend the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

Although it was a bumpy start, I enjoyed designing even more as I was learning and started teaching myself many different software and skills in order to create work that I really enjoy doing. I recently graduated this year with a BFA in Graphic Design.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think nothing ever goes smoothly for anyone. There is always some struggle. The struggle for me is the stress and pressure that comes with being a designer and finding out what exactly Graphic Design is. Like I said before I found out about Graphic Design when I was in high school, but what I was taught then was completely different from what I was expecting.

My first two years of college were a bit of a struggle as the knowledge I had about design at the time wasn’t nearly as good as my fellow classmates, so I felt that I was always left behind in the pack. At that time I had self-doubt on rather I should even continue to pursue a career in design but that didn’t stop me from wanting to learn. There are many types of graphic designers, like motion, web, or packaging designers.

At that time I didn’t know what “type” of designer I wanted to be. All I knew is that I wanted to make work that I like doing, even if it meant teaching myself everything there is to know about Graphic Design. That mindset is what helped grow and get passed my struggles during those years and till this day I stand by it. I love the design and I love teaching myself new things that will help me grow to be a better designer.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
As a freelance designer, I am willing to help anyone with their ideas. I work with a variety of projects but I specialize in motion graphics, UI/UX design and branding. In all the work I do, I try to find an excuse to add motion and show how dynamic they can be.

I feel the most proud when the people I work with really enjoy the work I make for them. It is the most satisfying feeling when someone says, “this looks awesome!”

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I’ve always been a quiet person. I’ve always kept to myself and never really spoke to anyone unless they spoke to me. I’ve been told that before actually meeting and talking to me, most people find me a bit intimidating because of my tall stature and stoic face.

I was always described as that angry looking tall guy that tends to blend in with the background. Well, that angry looking tall guy likes playing guitar and video games whenever he’s not busy looking at a computer screen for hours.
