Meet Liz Steinfeld of Liz Steinfeld Lingerie in Marblehead

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Steinfeld.

Liz, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My family has always been in retail, for generations and generations. I grew up in Chicago and Bergen, Norway, and have been business-minded from a young age. I’ve had a passion for lingerie for a long time, and when I saw that the store (previously named “Leisure Look” and then “Arabella Lingerie”) was for sale, I jumped at the opportunity to make this passion into a career. The store has been in Marblehead for fifty years, starting off as a little corset shop, so I feel so proud to be continuing its legacy in this town. I’ve been the owner for ten years now – time has flown by! In the past decade, I’ve really made the store my own, bringing in specialty European lingerie brands and making the shop more high-end, all while building a loyal customer base to whom I owe everything.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I was lucky enough to come into ownership of a business that was already a Marblehead institution, so I got to skip the trouble of getting off the ground. Small business ownership, though, is so fickle – a month’s sales can depend on anything from construction and traffic in the area to the weather. The instability is sometimes difficult, but we have just learned to work with flexibility.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Liz Steinfeld Lingerie story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a specialty, high-end lingerie shops. Our specialty is bras – everyone working in our shop is a certified fitter. Eighty percent of women wear the wrong bra size, and we are working to change that one-by-one! We also carry lingerie, swim, and pajamas, but nothing makes us more proud than having a customer walk in anxious and unhappy with their undergarments and walk out with a well-fitting bra. It changes everything – posture, comfort, and, most importantly, confidence. We make sure we are only carrying what you can’t buy anywhere else in the area; our customers keep on coming back because they know they can depend not only on our quality, but our unique items.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
It was absolutely luck that I ended up in the great town of Marblehead, where the opportunity was so present for me to take over the store. Everything just fell into place!
