Meet Dr. Helyne Hamelburg of Paradise Dental Associates

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Helyne Hamelburg.

Dr. Helyne, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my education at Brandeis University as a Chemistry major thinking I would be a researcher. I met Stephen, my Husband, who introduced me to dentistry. I had no passion for any career until I volunteered at Tufts Dental School. Once I was exposed to dentistry I fell in love with it. I knew it was the path for me.

Four years of dental school and two years of Periodontology program brought me to private practice. Eventually, I joined my husband and over the past 18 years, we have built Paradise Dental Associates.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road is never smooth. Being a woman in dentistry which historically, has been a male-dominated profession, has been difficult. After investing eight years as an associate and eventually a partner, we dissolved the relationship. My partner wasn’t ready to give up control and truly share the practice. What I thought was the worst possible situation, turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I joined my Husband and we built our practice.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Paradise Dental Associates – what should we know?
We are a multiple specialty dental office providing dentistry for the whole family. Our office is known for over-delivering to our patients and providing the best possible experience. We provide the highest quality of care with state-of-the-art technology.

However, What I am most proud of and what sets us apart is our commitment to give back to the community. Over the years, I have served on multiple non-profit boards.

Currently, I am the Chairwoman of the North Shore Dental district Society. As a Team, our office has supported through donations or volunteer participation in many community initiatives. We walk the North Shore Cancer Walk, serve meals at LifeBridge, provided free dental care for Veterans and those in need, participated in many food collections and hosted a Blood Drive with the American Red Cross at our office.

I, along with several members of my team have participated in Team Smile, delivering free dental care to children at Fenway Park. Our biggest and most ambitious endeavor to date will be our Mission Trip to the Dominican Republic in November. My Husband, ten team members and I, will be traveling to LaRomana, DR (one of the poorest areas in the world) to deliver care the those in need. Many of these people have never seen a dentist in their lives.

I am proud that ten of my team members have chosen to volunteer and donate their time to accompany me on the trip.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as the measure of impact I can make on others. Whether caring for a destitute child in the D.R., serving a mean to a homeless person within the community, donating time or money to a worthy cause or completing a treatment to improve the oral health of one of my patients.

I feel success when others benefit from my efforts. The responsibility I feel for my team is sobering. The fact that my ability to provide an opportunity for them is humbling. For me, success is measured by the improvement I can make in other people’s lives.
