Meet Jenna DeCicco of Fit Spirit Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenna DeCicco.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a true example of the statement “You are not a tree. If you don’t like where you’re at, move!”

I graduated from Suffolk University with a Bachelors Degree in Public Relations, however, my true passion was in Fitness, Health and Wellness. Some may say “what a waste!”, but I took all that I had learned in college, and just applied it to another field. If you’re passionate enough about what you’re doing, the road that you choose will always be the right one.

After graduating college in 2008, I became a Certified Personal Trainer through NASM and went on to become certified in Spinning, Group Exercise, Pre/Post-Natal Fitness, and Nutrition. I am an advocate for maintaining fitness throughout pregnancy, and with doctors permission, love to help women maintain their strength all the way through.

I am extremely passionate about living a holistic lifestyle, from foods to beauty/body treatments (gua sha, cryotherapy, cupping, acupuncture, infrared sauna, etc) and showing others how to do the same in the easiest ways possible. In a society that has lost touch with how good our bodies are supposed to feel because our switch is always “ON”, it is my goal to get you back to a place that feels balanced, energized, and light; both in your mind and body.

I am also a hustler when it comes to fitness. Nothing makes me happier than preparing a workout for my classes and then watching that workout come to life with perseverance, hustle, and TONS of sweat. I will bring out a part of you that you never knew existed.. but that I know is in there, ready to emerge. You can guarantee that every workout will be different, and will push you to a place that you once thought was impossible.

A quote I often say is “Procrastination is fear of failure, and fear is just a figment of our imagination. All you have to do is start!”

I created a website fitspiritwellness.com, formally fitwithjennadecicco.com, where you will find free workouts, healthy recipes, my favorite natural products, my recommended holistic supplements, and all of the ways I keep myself and my family healthy. Search the hashtag #alismeals, to see my daughters favorite healthy, quick, and easy meals!

What is a “Fit Spirit” you ask? Don’t worry, I’ll get to that!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Smooth roads often mean that you took a shortcut, missing any challenges along the way that is necessary for growth and appreciation. Our struggles are what build our passion for our purpose, and my road had its fair share of divots and roadblocks.

I like to think of them as detours. Let’s start with nutrition. I did not grow up eating organic, unprocessed food, and I had allergic reactions to dyes found in foods, drinks, shampoo, chapstick and more. My weight constantly fluctuated, and although I was always active in sports, I was not fueling my body properly.

I felt heavy, foggy headed, inflamed and sluggish. Who wants to go through life like that?! Unfortunately, this is a reality for most people. Just because you workout regularly, does not mean that you are in good shape internally. Nutrition is a top priority, and fitness is the cherry on top. As I got older, I took my health into my own hands, but not without those bumps in the road. I fell into the same trap as most people do when trying to eat better; the “low carb, fat-free, sugar-free” trap.

This not only wreaked havoc on my skin, digestion, focus, and overall health, but it made me question this craze as a whole, and what it was doing to my body. I learned that these “fake” foods were actually making me crave more sugar, and confusing my body to a point that it no longer trusted me; because that’s what these foods do. After all, they’re not real! Something needed to change, and this time, I was steadfast in fixing it.

I completely changed my eating habits and started living as holistic as possible. My fridge was packed with colorful fruits and vegetables, lean organic protein and plant protein, healthy fats from nuts, seeds, and oil, and high-quality supplements such as probiotics, fish oil, and greens powder. I learned about farming, pesticides, and where my food was coming from, as well as what was in my everyday products.

This is crucial information for EVERYONE to learn, but most are too afraid to know the truth. We don’t realize the importance of what we’re putting into, and onto our body, until an issue arises that makes us pay attention. My goal is to prepare my clients and readers to take action before it gets to this point, the first lesson being READ YOUR LABELS!

Now let’s talk fitness! I also fell into the “more is more” mentality, and ran my body into the ground. Rest days? Not on my agenda. Too tired and sore today? Too bad, get to work! Teach another class? SURE! Did I have a lean, toned body? Yup. But I was also always tired, cold, and irritable. My stomach always hurt from too much whey protein powder, greek yogurt, zero calorie drinks, and lots of black coffee; not to mention the constant physical stress that it endured day in and day out from constant movement.

My mind to body connection wasn’t there, and this is something that is still SO common in today’s society, with its unrealistic expectations and standards. We are told “double up on your workouts!”, instead of being educated on the importance of rest days; which is critical in showing progress and seeing results.

If there is one point that I want to get across its this; YOUR BODY WILL ONLY WORK WITH YOU UNDER EXTREME MEASURES FOR SO LONG, BEFORE IT STARTS TO WORK AGAINST YOU.

I was able to reset my body on my own, giving it the time it needed to rest, repair, and recharge. For the first time in a long time, I slowed down and let my body lead… something that so many of us struggle to do. Mandatory 1-2 rest days per week, more whole foods, more listing to my body, and more naps!! Who doesn’t love naps?!

The results that I have seen within myself are a testament to my lifestyle choices and changes. I went through bumps in the road in order to reach my destination today, and so I could learn the tools to help others who may be on a similar path. In all aspects of life, more does not always mean better. If you’re feeling like you’re on a repetitive, exhausting Ferris wheel, realize that you have the power to get off and change the ride.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Fit Spirit Wellness (formally Fit with Jenna DeCicco) – what should we know?
My business, Fit Spirit Wellness, is a Holistic approach to health and fitness. But before I get into that, I will answer the most frequent question… “What is a Fit Spirit?!” A “FIt Spirit” is the name that I came up with for the inner voice that urges you to do better. Sometimes it’s very low and you can hardly hear it, but eventually, it gets louder and louder.. if you allow it to!

It’s the voice that tells you to “keep pushing” on your run, or to even “get up and start exercising”. It’s the voice that says “no more processed foods”, or “let’s go to the farmers market”, or “I am going to start adding green vegetables to every meal”.

It’s the voice that puts your after-dinner family walk into effect, or challenges you to up your weights in your fitness class because it KNOWS you can handle it. Your “Fit Spirit” is your internal healthy living guide, no matter your starting point or fitness level. That is what FIT SPIRIT WELLNESS is all about; Mind, Body and Spirit…. fitness, nutrition, and overall well being.

It’s about simple changes that can be applied to any lifestyle or schedule, focusing on real foods, more movement, enough downtime, and supplementation to help fill in the gaps that may be missing from our diet. I am partnered with a nutrition line that has done just that, which you can find at my link, fitspiritfuel.com.

These supplements have bettered my health, and the health of many clients; from vegan protein and organic greens powder to probiotics and fish oil. My favorite supplement is the Mineral and Antioxidants powder, which keeps me hydrated and energized throughout my classes. All of the products are safe for the whole family and free of anything that has no place in our body. They are truly whole food, holistic supplements, that have everyone’s best health in mind.

Now don’t get me wrong.. I love myself a glass of wine and the occasional treat, but I know how good our bodies are made to feel, so that is what I want others to feel too. In my fitness classes at Golds Gym in Reading, I am your “FIt Spirit” voice. I am always reminding you of your abilities to conquer whatever comes your way.

I specialize in Tabata, Interval Training, and Spin (Tabata Spin being one of my favorite classes to teach!), and I will push you right out of your comfort zone; motivating you every step of the way. All fitness levels are welcome in my classes, and I always offer modifications, as well as constant form correction to give you the best workout possible.

Safety is ALWAYS first,

My style of teaching is about progress, consistency, and focus. You will work hard, and you will feel yourself getting stronger. No class is ever the same, but every class will force you to show up to your potential and remind you that it is a blessing to do what you’re doing at this moment.

In an industry that can be very “follow the leader”, I pride myself on being authentic and honest. Whatever the fitness trend may be at the moment, my teaching style and approach to health maintains consistent. I want to see you break boundaries, and I’ll be the one handing you a hammer to do it.

Whether you are new to exercise, pregnant, recovering from an injury, or have been working out for years, my goal is to help you connect your mind with your body, and truly learn how to feel your best; at ANY level. Be sure to follow my Instagram and Facebook to see where I’m teaching, and I also offer personalized nutrition meal plans, fitness plans, and 24-hour accountability coaching.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Although success may come from individual hard work, there are always people that show up for you, helping your dreams become a reality. Clients, class followers, blog readers, family and friends… thank you for trusting me and following me on my journey so that I can help you with yours.

The future is bright, and the sky is the limit! I look forward to what’s ahead, and all of my plans for myself and YOU!
