Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Hare.
Robert, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I became enthralled with photography after my father purchased my first film camera on my 12th birthday. Every day since I’ve been captivated by all kinds of photography but my passion has always been portraits and beauty photography. However, like most life lead me down a different path and pushed my photography to more of a hobby while I pursued a career in the magazine industry after college. I was hired as a Marketing and Sales Executive with the luxury publication Robb Report and travelled all over the country for 12 years selling advertising and marketing our publications to the ultra-rich. In late 20o7 I saw the decline in the print industry starting to take hold and advertising revenues were dropping year over year.
I decided in 2008 that I needed a contingency plan and Robert Hare Photography was born. 6 months later the inevitable happened and I was laid off – this was one of the happiest days of my life because it meant now I was free to dive headlong into my photography passion. In order to help support my family while I grew my business I needed another job to help financially. I found LensProToGo, one of the largest cameras and lens rental companies in the country. To this day I still work for this amazing company as it has helped me so much in my personal pursuit of photography and allowed me to shoot on some of the best gear in the industry.
Due to my time with LensProToGo I have become a much more gear savvy and technically skilled photographer. I’m around Photographers from every genre on a daily basis and provide equipment support and guidance to amateur through top tier professionals. 2018 marks my 10th year in business and I’ve worked hard to develop a well-respected reputation not only among my piers but also an extensive list of high-profile commercial clients. Some of my clients over the past several years include; The New England Patriots, New England Patriots Cheerleaders, CBS Sports, NBC Sports, Jeb Bush, Sunovion Pharmaceuticals, JetBlue, and Imperial Pearl to name just a few.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
First and foremost I’m a Commercial Photographer specializing in Portraiture and Real Estate but I do a little bit of everything including Weddings, Family/Senior Portraits, Product Photography, Sports, Fashion, Boudoir and just about anything else I can get my camera on. I always said if I can see it – I can capture it. I love everything about this industry and pride myself on sharing what I know with anyone willing to learn. I’ve been inspired by the greats and admire those that have struggled to find success. This isn’t an easy business and it takes hustle – I’ve tried to honor that by being tireless in my pursuit.
Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
I think the lack of trust in the photo industry has been a major issue over the past several years. We are all acutely aware of the stories and accusations of artists exploiting, harassing and even assaulting individuals in what is supposed to be a safe and professional environment. The truth is this is not a new occurrence and there have been stories for years in the photography industry of unprofessional behavior by photographers/producers/directors on set. I have been very outspoken of my condemnation of this behavior and have called for greater protection of models/actors and other artists while on set.
I believe the professional respect and trust between an artist and their subject/client is paramount when it comes to capturing the best possible images. There is no place in this industry for those that abuse and destroy that trust. I believe those that violate this professional contract should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and banned from the industry forever.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My work has been featured in print both nationally and internationally. I have also had many images appear on National Television and throughout the web. If you are a fan of the Patriots and watch CBS Thursday Night Football you have seen many of my images of the players during Player Profiles and Features. I also photographed the past two New England Patriot Cheerleaders Calendars along with their posters and promotional photos. I’ve done several National Advertising campaigns including the Olivia Culpo national jewelry campaign for Imperial Pearl.
