Meet Juan Mendez of Sunshine’s Furniture in Somerville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan Mendez.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Juan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We are a group of three friends with different backgrounds. Alejandro is a computer programmer, Farley has been a carpenter for over 10 years now, and my education was in organic agriculture. In December 2014 the previous owner decided to sell the store and Alejandro and I got involved. The style of the store is the same, but we are focusing on expanding the custom build program, allowing the customer to create their own design.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Smooth sailing so far.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Sunshine’s Furniture story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a furniture store in Somerville that builds and restores furniture. Everything is made in our carpenters shop in Everett. At Sunshine’s, every piece is an original, refurbished or made totally from scratch. We like to make colorful, unique pieces with their own style. The only part that remains of the restored pieces we work with is the shape, as we add our own hardware, colors, wood when necessary and flair.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe luck is the consequence of hard work. Since day one, we have been working very hard to keep the store running and to keep our customer base as well as new customers happy. This has made us successful.
