Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Hession.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started Lawn Jon Services when I was 18 years old. I was inspired to work for myself and work really hard. I enjoy working outdoors and not being isolated in one area indoors all day long. I did some brain storming and decided to start a Landscaping company. The start-up cost isn’t out of control and I could do something that makes the customer happy to come home to. I started with my Gray Mini Van, a 21inch mower, a broom, and a weed whacker. With consistency and word of mouth I slowly but surely started to grow. I would hand out business cards to regular customers at my two main jobs I had at the time and really put my name out there. It took me a few years to juggle the full time jobs and the Landscaping on the side until I found a balance in the amount of customers I accumulated and then I gradually switched over to running my business full time. To this day we have a mowing crew and a labor crew each day. My ambition today is to keep growing and continue to provide excellent service to our clients.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The labor field is never a smooth road. If only words could describe how difficult it is to find hard workers nowadays. Not many young men want to work hard in the hot sun all day or shovel heavy snow in the freezing temperatures. The days are long and tiring after doing continuous labor over and over. Other struggles along the way was saving up money for new equipment or vehicles.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Lawn Jon Services story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a full Landscape, Painting, Hardscape provider and much more. We specialize in Landscaping but over the years I have branched out to Painting to have some income reliability in the winter months when there isn’t as much work. We are way more different than other landscape companies because since we aren’t as big as most companies we can focus more on the quality of work we provide because I am always on site to oversee the job and make sure it gets done as well as possible. Also our pricing is more competitive than other companies because they have a lot more overhead cost. All of our equipment is owned outright.
