Today we’d like to introduce you to Bob Rook.
Bob, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was a music lawyer and needed a place for my friends in bands to go after gigs because of the Boston Blue Laws (Clubs closed at Midnight) Rented a basement apt in Coolidge Corner and invited my rock friends to hang out. We all had the midnight munchies so I bought an ice cream machine and learned how to make ice cream. After months of paying rent, ice cream costs etc converted the “hippie crash pad” into an ice cream store. Ran the business as a hobby till the mid-1990’s. When I left the music business to devote full time to the ice cream business.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been a ” long strange trip”. Opening in many different (9 and more on the way) countries, learning the cultures, customs, learning the laws etc.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Emack & Bolio’s story. Tell us more about the business.
“Hippie” Ice cream shops opened 3 years before Ben & Jerrys. Invented the flavored cones in 1980 which went viral thru Instagram.
Most proud of my partners around the world who understand the vision and bring good will and good vibes to our customers (citizens of the world) in 9 different countries with more countries on the horizon.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Without high-speed internet and Instagram, this could not have happened.
