Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzanne Moseley.
Suzanne, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been an artist/designer for twenty years and started creating colorful pet portraits in 2015. I primarily use my global textile inspired woodblock prints to collage large, colorful, animated portraits of client’s pets based on their photographs. My dream is to take these whimsical creations and design children’s bedding and accessories with them.
I am also pursuing a picture book idea, for children or adults, featuring the pet’s portraits and their sweet personalities as adoringly described by the owners.
Has it been a smooth road?
My commissioned work has mostly been the word of mouth for which I am grateful. I have struggled to find the time to create an adequate marketing platform to maximize its exposure beyond my familiar crowd. This is every artist’s dilemma-balancing time between developing the art itself vs. promoting it. I have a strong marketing and promotion background to draw from but there has been a big learning curve in the past year for me on book illustrating and authoring as another leg of my vision as well as in investigating the bedding industry.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Posie Mose Pet Portraits story. Tell us more about the business.
To date, the response to my artwork has been very positive which is rewarding and motivating. My clients love having meaningful art for their homes and folks in both the publishing and bedding industry see my design style as unique and promising. My biggest challenge has been honing in on the best way to build my business first as there seems to be endless options. For the coming year, I intend to refocus back on building a client base for the portraits themselves, as I am a newcomer to Boston itself having moved here from Weston a year ago when the last of my kids went off to college. This, along with evolving my collaging and printmaking making capabilities in new ways, should continue to lead me to realize the potential of my work.
I am a bit of a serial entrepreneur and have been most proud of my past achievements in a start-up business I had in the craft industry a few years back. Specifically, I was able to gain national distribution of the product line in AC Moore as well as secure two publishing deals, TV appearances on HGTV and DIY and QVC. I hope to be able to market the pet portraits and related product concepts to this high degree as well, once I get more traction defining the product line and its optimal selling platform.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Customizable products are where the global market is heading and so I believe my work is on trend and will remain viable longer term. Among pet enthusiasts, there appears to be endless opportunities to thrill them with new and unique products as well. At lower price points, I hope to be able to create prints of my work of the more popular breeds to sell online.
Pricing:
- The customized pet portraits cost $350 each and are made from all original art papers, primarily woodblock prints.
- The image area is 20”x 20” along with a 2” white border. Therefore the total artwork size is 24”x 24”.
