Life and Work with Lindsay Wolff and Emily Newberg

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Wolff and Emily Newberg.

Lindsay and Emily, please share your story with us.
We met in the spring of 2016, as both of us were still fairly new birth and postpartum doulas, to see if we would be fitting backup doulas for one another. Through our time together over coffee, brunches, prenatal meetings with clients and brainstorming sessions, we both realized we had a shared vision of having a physical location where we could welcome clients as well as other families in the community. We wanted to have a place that we could use to foster a sense of community in the parenting journey and to bring families of all varieties together for prenatal workshops, classes, and parenting support groups/casual hang-outs. In the spring of 2018, the opportunity to start such a business sort of fell right into our laps and we didn’t hesitate to go for it and open Beantown Babies! We have had so much positive feedback about the space and the programs that we have been running there and we can’t wait to see it grow further!

Has it been a smooth road?
There are always struggles along the way. We have struggled with how to manage our separate businesses while maintaining this one, how to divide work, and with who needs to be where and at what time. It is hard enough for one person to manage their own schedule; having two of us makes it exponentially more complicated. However, our personalities are so compatible that it never really feels like a “problem” and we work through things fairly easily. I guess our advice to women starting a similar journey is: work with someone you love and who has a similar vision and set of priorities and whom you can talk to openly. Having a partner can be a WONDERFUL thing! Looking into the future, we can foresee struggles while we grow but are also super excited to face them together.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Beantown Babies – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
As our tagline states, our mission is to “start your parenting journey off on solid ground.” This means we have created a solid foundation of support for families through fertility, conception, birth, and postpartum. Lindsay is also in the midst of bereavement training and is honored and prepared to provide support for families through any outcome. Our mission at Beantown Babies is to create that community of families that is often lacking in our modern culture, to have people to turn to when seeking information, support or a listening ear. We hope that families grow together at Beantown Babies so that they know that others are facing similar challenges/joys/fears/excitement during this transformative time in their lives.

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
No career, self-driven or not, is without challenges. Success lies in the small victories, especially in the beginning. These are all idioms that are common. I think my most important piece of advice is to make friends and connections with other people in related fields early on in your career. It is easier to thrive with support from others than to try to make a name for yourself alone.
