Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Barrick.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Melanie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Sweet Stuff Bake Shop grew from a creative hobby into a desire to bring personalized, custom sweets to a small-town audience. Starting when our children were young, creative and untraditional cakes were always part of our party plans.
Over the years, friends began to take notice of the cakes at our parties and expressed interest in having similar confections for their own birthdays. Sweet Stuff Bake Shop was established in 2010, as a home-based bake shop.
Complementing my eye for precision and my constant efforts for perfection in my work, my simple philosophy has always been “if it doesn’t taste good, it’s not worth decorating.” Every item is baked fresh, from scratch, using only the best, all-natural ingredients. Butter, flour, sugar… they are the basis of what makes Sweet Stuff so delicious.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Some of the greatest challenges experienced in the growth and development we’ve experienced at Sweet Stuff Bake Shop have come in recognizing our limits. I have experienced more sleepless nights as a result of operating the bake shop than I did both rearing three children and through two college degrees combined.
There are some weekends where a collective four hours of sleep from Friday morning until Sunday afternoon are the norm. Learning my limits and finding the strength to say “no,” are the biggest obstacles I’ve come across so far.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Sweet Stuff Bake Shop – what should we know?
Sweet Stuff Bake Shop is a home-based bake shop located in Norton, MA. We are well-known for our custom cakes, our amazing cinnamon buns and our care-package deliveries to students at Wheaton College.
We are proud of our reputation in our community as a sponsor of youth programs in both the local sports organizations and our town library. We are equally proud of the faith that the Wheaton College community places in us to treat their students while they are away from home.
As for what sets up apart from others, honestly, we don’t pay much attention to others.
We just focus on turning out the best possible product and serving our customers to the best of our ability every day. We spread smiles one sweet tooth at a time!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My greatest support network is definitely my family. My husband, a partner in his accounting firm, spends more weekends making frosting and washing cake pans than I care to admit, all the while claiming that it’s “his pleasure” to help… if only I had an ounce of his selflessness!
My children have run more stairs than most NFL players bringing items to the kitchen from our downstairs pantry area… I’m not sure what I would do without their willingness to help. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the many friends who’ve sacrificed their waistlines to taste test new recipes for me.
The greater Norton community, as well as so many families in the surrounding area, provide us with the support we need to feel like we are making a difference in our community. We couldn’t do it without them.
