Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Davis.
Susan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
On Valentine’s Day 2018, I launched SHD Marketing, a full-service marketing agency serving businesses of all sizes. After spending over a decade working for a Fortune 6 company, I’m thrilled to apply my marketing skills towards my passion for small businesses.
Small businesses are critical to our communities and our country. While the number of small businesses continues to grow each year, one of the top challenges business owners face is around marketing. SHD Marketing helps by cutting through the complexity to create marketing plans and campaigns that are approachable, effective, and fun. Every business is unique, so our solutions are customized to match our clients’ specific needs.
Their success is our success. While we launched only 6 months ago, we already have over 20 clients. Our clients typically come to us for help launching or growing their business. One of our first clients was Kindred Organizing. Kristen Kindred came to us with her business plan and we built out the marketing foundation including her branding, logo, website, marketing plan, and social media strategy.
Other clients are established businesses like Ambrosia Salon and Day Spa. The owners worked with us to update their website to make it more modern and user-friendly.
Working with business owners and entrepreneurs has been more interesting and gratifying than I ever thought possible. I get to spend my day helping real people with their inspiring projects and I just love it.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think Teddy Roosevelt said “Nothing worth having comes easily” and I couldn’t agree more. While I truly love what I do, its hard work. Thankfully, I have a supportive husband and awesome family and friends in my corner. Starting a new business is a risk. My clients can probably relate that some days the risk feels manageable and some days it feels less certain. Riding the ebb and flow takes sea legs which I’m getting used to!
But, clients who are passionate and innovative have a contagious energy and that motivates me. If I can help someone grow the business they are passionate about, then I know that is a day well spent. Like most of my clients, my family is a huge priority. And while owning your own business means you are working hard, it also provides flexibility.
My children are still very young, and I love that I can pop out of the office to hear about their morning or to volunteer at their school. And when they meet my clients, it is a great opportunity to discuss the diverse things people in our community are doing. From artists and interior designers to therapists and realtors, my children are seeing firsthand how small businesses are integral to the community. Who knows, maybe it will inspire them to one day!
